IGP Gasana urges officers to make impact in UN mission
The Inspector General of Police (IGP), Emmanuel K. Gasana, while speaking to commanders of contingents set to be deployed for a peacekeeping mission in the Central African Republic (CAR), on September 23, challenged them to stay focused to the mission mandate to bring about peace and security.
He was officiating at the closure of a three-day training of 60 police officers that will command the three contingents that are set to be deployed under the UN Multi-dimensional Integrated Stabilisation Mission in CAR (MINUSCA).
Two Formed Police Units (FPUs) and a Protection Support Unit (PSU) composed of 420 are set to be deployed in CAR . One FPU contingent will replace the maiden contingent deployed in September last year. Read More…
IGP Gasana challenges driving schools on professionalism
The Inspector General of Police (IGP) Emmanuel K. Gasana urged driving school proprietors to adopt quality standards and modern training methods to produce students that foster road traffic safety.
He made the call on September 21 during a meeting with owners and representatives of 47 driving schools operating in the country.
The meeting which was hosted at the Rwanda National Police (RNP) Headquarters in Kacyiru was part of the ongoing road safety awareness campaign month.
In his message, IGP Gasana said that the importance of driving schools in the society today cannot be overemphasized – noting that instilling professional and modern driving techniques among aspiring drivers is important in drastically minimizing road accidents. Read More…
DIGP Marizamunda urges transport companies to set internal road safety standards
In line with the ongoing month-long road safety awareness campaign, the Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIGP) in charge of Administration and Personnel, Juvénal Marizamunda challenged owners and heads of public transport companies to evaluate and follow up their drivers and ensure maximum road safety standards and prevent accidents caused by reckless drivers.
DIGP Marizamunda made the remarks as he met with heads and representatives public transport associations on Tuesday September 22, at City of Kigali offices.
He pointed out that “nothing is worth a human life,” a reason they should initiate and implement internal road safety regulations to keep their drivers in the check.
“Accidents do not only affect those involved, they sometimes claim lives of pedestrians, and we must avoid them. You are aware of the distance and the time it take for a driver to move from one part of the country to another, that determines if the driver was overspending or not,” DIGP Marizamunda said. Gender based violence: Public reminded to break silence
Rwanda National Police reminds the general public to break silence and report incidences of domestic and gender-based violence in their respective communities, some of which happen in their eyesight.
The call stems from recent cases of assault in families, especially between spouses.
A case in point happened on September 21 in Karongi District where a woman allegedly seriously assaulted her husband on the neck with a machete.
According to Police, the couple ensured in a domestic related argument at their home in Shyembe, Murambi Sector which forced the wife to take the bloody and criminal action against her 60-year old spouse. Read More…
Seized illicit brew worth Rwf4 million destroyed in Bugesera
About 4640 litres of varied brands of illicit drinks valued at Rwf4 million seized in varied Police operations in Bugesera District were destroyed on September 23, with a call for the public to stand up against the illicit drugs blamed for fuelling other community crimes.
The destroyed illicit substances confiscated in the last one month include 1480 liters of a banned gin, Kanyanga, 4160 litres varied brands of locally made illicit brew and 43 kilograms and 200 pellets of cannabis.
The public destruction exercise was witnessed by the district mayor, Louis Rwagaju along with the District Police Commander Superintendent of Police (SP) Darius Kalisa, among others.

Call for public to immediately report fire breakouts
Rwanda National Police (RNP) reminds the general public to comply with firefighting regulations and provide quick reports in case of fire outbreak for quick response.
The public have also been called upon to report illegal activities and illegal electricity connection which also contribute to fire breakouts.
Police says that although the frequency of large fire occurrences is not worrisome, it is important that every Rwandan become conscious of things that can cause infernos and work towards preventing them.
Since Monday, four separate fire incidents were reported in Nyamasheke, Rutsiro Kicukiro and Gasabo districts.

Man arrested while attempting to con MTN agent with fake currency
A man in Remera Sector, Gasabo District has been arrested for using false currency, as Rwanda National Police (RNP) continues its operations to wipe out the scourge.
The Suspect, Deodatus Mbarushimana, is accused of using counterfeit money to con an MTN Mobile money agent on September 21, when he attempted to deposit fakes amounting to Rwf500,000 to his mobile money account.
However, upon receiving the fake notes, the agent became suspicious and stealthily alerted police officers in the area, who immediately apprehended the suspect.
The Police Spokesperson for Central Region, Superintendent Modeste Mbabazi, revealed that upon his arrest, the police officers requested a nearby bank branch to ascertain the nature of the currency notes – and they affirmed that they were indeed counterfeits. Read More…

The Rwanda National Police (RNP) has organized a football tournament that will bring together its 12 units in a month-long healthy exercise meant to support and develop sports within the force.
Group A1 includes Police Training School (PTS) Gishari, Mayange and Police General Headquarters; Group A2 – Canine Brigade, National Police College (NPC) and Interforce.
The Central, Northern and Eastern regions will tussle in group B1 while Traffic, Western and Southern regions will face off in group B2.
In semi finals, the winner in Group A1 will face the winner in Group A2 while the winner in Group B1 will face their opponent from Group B2.
Winners in the two groups will face off in the final to be played on October 23.
In the opening matches, PTS drew 2-2 with the RNP headquarters; NPC defeated Interforce 3-1; Central Region was stunned 4-1 by the Eastern Region while the Western Region left it late to grab a winner against Traffic in a 3-2 hard fought win in Muhanga.
RNP environmental protection campaign extended to Gakenke
Rwanda National Police (RNP) on September 23, extended its ongoing environmental protection campaign to Gakenke district where residents of Muhondo sector were presented with benefits of protecting the ecosystem.
They were also urged to take a lead in preventing and reporting environmental crime in their neighborhoods.
The campaign is spearheaded by the RNP Environmental Protection Unit (EPU) in the CID department and was presided over by the head of customer care, Chief Inspector of Police (CIP) Alexis Gasana.
“If we are to mitigate effects of climate change, we need to come up with strategies of protecting our environment jointly; we can only achieve that by collectively planting trees, creating terraces and even jealously protecting what is there like forests,” Chief Inspector of Police (CIP) Alexis Gasana told residents.

Police FC continues unbeaten run
Police Football Club maintained its unbeaten run in the Azam Rwanda Premier League to three matches after coming from behind to force a 1-all draw against defending champions, APR at Kicukiro artificial turf on Friday.
Striker, Isae Isonga scored the hard earned goal in the 70th minute to cancel Jean Claude Iranzi's early goal scored in the 14th minute into the match.
Police FC overturned the game in the second half with Coach Andre Cassa Mbugo seemingly adopting the attacking option.
Isonga and captain Jacques Tuyisenge kept APR defenders at bay through the second 45 minutes.
With APR taking the defensive side to protect their lead, it gave the law enforcers a better option - to attack.
A poor clearance and miscommunication in the APR defence was a heaven sent chance for Isonga to level the score about 20 minutes to the end of the match. Read More…
Traffic Month: Motorcyclists reminded of their road safety obligation
As part of efforts to improve road safety, Rwanda National Police (RNP) reached out to over 3000 commercial motorcyclists and cyclists operating in Kigali and urged them to be guided by professionalism and discipline while observing road safety standards.
Police delivered the message under the auspices of the ‘Road Safety Month, on September 25, in a meeting with the motorcyclists in Gasabo district.
The meeting held at Amahoro stadium, was also attended by members of district administrative organ, DASSO , members of community policing committees and local leaders.
In his message, Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Elias Mwesigye, the Central Region Police Commander, noted that motorcyclists should have a shared responsibility on the road to avoid causing or involving in deadly crashes.
He observed that 50 percent of all road accidents registered between January and August this year across the country, were caused or involved motorcyclists. Read More….
Man arrested for attempting to bribe Police officer
Police in Nyagatare District is holding one John Hatangimana who was apprehended recently as he attempted to bribe a police officer to release his impounded motorcycle.
The suspect was apprehended red-handed as he tried to bribe the officer with Rwf25,000 to release his motorcycle.
The motorcycle had been impounded after the o.wner was found without required riding documents.
According to the Eastern Region Police spokesperson Inspector of Police (IP) Emmanuel Kayigi, officers impounded the motorcycle after Hatangimana was found without a driver's licence and had violated traffic rules. Read More…
Five suspected drug dealers arrested in Ngoma, Kayonza
Five people were on Friday night arrested in Ngoma and Kayonza Districts in connection with distributing and consuming of narcotics.
The suspects were apprehended separately in different police operations.
Police identified the suspects as Jean Pierre Nzabahimana, Jean de Dieu Nsabimana, Elias Shyirambere, Jean Paul Twagirimana all arrested in Ngoma, and Faustin Kayiranga, 26 arrested in Kayonza.
In Ngoma, the quartet was found in possession of 20 litres of banned gin commonly known as Kanyanga and 320 pellets of cannabis.
They are currently held at Zaza and Remera Police stations. Read More…
Currency counterfeit: Police issues stun warning
Rwanda National Police has issued a stun warning against anyone who may be involved in either making or distributing counterfeit currencies, an offence punishable under article 601 of the penal code.
It states that "any person who fraudulently counterfeits, falsifies or alters coins, which are legal tender in Rwanda or abroad, bills issued by the State and bearing its stamp or emblem, banknotes, authorised notes or any other related effects used in Rwanda or abroad, or any person who introduces or issues on the Rwandan territory bills or notes which are legal tender with knowledge that they are counterfeit or altered, shall be liable to a term of imprisonment of between five and seven years. Police Joins Residents in Umuganda countrywide
The Inspector General of Police (IGP) Emmanuel K Gasana, this Saturday September 26, joined Southern Province residents in the monthly umuganda and tutored them about road safety and crime prevention.
During the event, residents worked with the police to clear the land where several houses of the needy will be constructed. The IGP also pledged to help construct 4 houses for the vulnerable families.
Elsewhere, Police was deeply involved in Umuganda where officers cleaned different surroundings in all provinces as well as educating the masses on road safety as part of the ongoing monthly campaign, and crime prevention and reporting. Read More…
Police Handball Club beat UR Huye campus 48-16
The Rwanda National Police Handball Club is close to winning the national league cup for the third successive season following the Saturday easy win against University of Rwanda Huye campus.
Police Handball Club found no obstacle to beat their opponent UR Huye campus 46-18 on the sixteenth day of the league.
The win took the law enforcers to a totally of 48 points to maintain their place at the summit, four points ahead of second placed, APR.
