Police, REMA in awareness on air pollution ahead of ‘International Air Quality Day’
Rwanda National Police (RNP) and Rwanda Environment Management Authority (REMA) launched a campaign on Saturday, September 5, to further raise awareness on air pollution and fuel emission control measures.
The awareness also involves mass testing of vehicle emissions. It is conducted in line with the ‘International Air Quality Day’ held every September 7, to educate the public on air pollution and control measures. Read more
COVID-19: Another hospitality establishment closed over violation of prevention measures
A hospitality establishment named ‘Umunara bar’ located in City of Kigali in Gisozi sector of Gasabo District has been closed and owner penalized after being caught red-handed by the Police and local authorities violating COVID-19 prevention measures.
In the evening of Wednesday, September 2, at around 6pm, 19 people were found gathered at the bar drinking beer, according to the Executive secretary of Gisozi sector, Providence Musasangohe. Not only were they drinking beer, they were also seated very close to each other. Additionally, this was the second time the bar owner was caught in such illegalities. Read more
COVID-19: Police warn motorists against smuggling people out of places under lockdown
Rwanda National Police (RNP) warns motorists against unlawful transportation of people from City of Kigali and other areas under lockdown, to other parts of the country.
The Cabinet meeting of August 26, prohibits public transport between City of Kigali and other parts of the country.
RNP spokesperson, Commissioner of Police (CP) John Bosco Kabera reminded motorists to comply with the directive to prevent the spread of coronavirus.
“Although private vehicles are not restricted, they should be used for the intended purposes but not commercial movements in this period to transport people in and out of places that were placed under lockdown or where public transportation is prohibited. The same goes to taxi-moto operators, which can easily be used to smuggle people through remote roads. Anyone caught in these illegal and risky practices will face severe consequences,” CP Kabera warned. Read more
Kamonyi: Seven arrested over illegal mining, mineral trade
Seven people were arrested in separate Police operations against illegal mining and mineral trade conducted in Kayumbu Sector of Kamonyi District on Friday, September 4.
The suspects include one Onesphore Kamana, 45, who was caught with 15 tonnes of Cassiterite and Coltan minerals.
Others are Joseph Nshimiyimana, 37, who was found with 300kgs of cassiterite and coltan and Justin Habumuremyi, 46, found with 31.5kgs.

Rubavu: Police arrest two over money counterfeit
Police in Rubavu District arrested two people on Wednesday, September 2, with counterfeit money amounting to Rwf40,000.
Providence Nyiramana, 36, and Pascal Musabimana, 35, were arrested in Nyundo Cell, Mudende Sector.
Their arrest was the result of information from residents of Nyundo, according to the Police spokesperson for the Western region, Chief Inspector of Police (CIP) Bonaventure Twizere Karekezi.Read more
COVID-19: Man arrested over abusing prevention directives, attempted bribery
Just a few days after the new COVID-19 preventive measures were put in place, including the closing of all bars, Antoine Uwimana, a resident of Rutsiro District, Musasa Sector, was caught red-handed selling alcohol contrary to the guidelines set by Rwanda Development Board (RDB).
Uwimana had turned his restaurant into a bar.
Expecting his penalty to be loosened, he tried to bribe the police officers with Rwf5,000. Read more
