Media is a key player in proactive policing, says Minister Busingye

The periodic interaction session that brings together Rwanda National Police (RNP) and the media fraternity convened this Friday at the force’s headquarters in Kacyiru and discussed measures to strengthen partnership in raising awareness against crimes.

The one-day traditional event focused mainly on security in the forthcoming 25th commemoration of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi. They also tackled other areas related to cybercrimes committed through media and internet regulation, and the role of media in security and crime prevention.

At least 150 media practitioners turned up for the session held under the theme: “Upholding the partnership journey through professionalism.”

The Minister of Justice and Attorney General, Johnstone Busingye, while addressing the media, said that “what the country is doing now is for the future of generations” and that media plays an important role in that transformation journey. Read more

RYVCP Commended for transforming community lives

Rwanda National Police (RNP) commended activities for Youth Volunteers in Community Policing (YVCP), in reducing crimes and for their involvement in Human security related activities across the nation. 

Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Rose Muhisoni the Deputy Commissioner in charge of outreach programs said that since their foundation and in only six years of partnering with Police and other government agencies, positive progress has been made in reducing community crimes through sensitization activities at community levels.

“They have championed the formation of anti-crime clubs in schools and in different categories of youth, partnered with RNP and government institutions in anti-GBV and drug abuse campaigns,” she said. Read more

Over 140 officers complete ‘drills instructors’ course’

At least 142 Police officers completed a two-month ‘drills instructors’ course’ at the Police Training School (PTS) Gishari, on Wednesday.

The course with 13 of the trainees being women was designed to prepare officers who will spearhead the same training programme.

It focuses mainly on leadership and management, general instructional methods and psychology of learning. Other includes disciplines, physical fitness, drills and duties and skills at arms. Read more

Police reinforces compulsory speed governor policy

The Traffic and Road Safety Department has launched an operation to impound public service vehicles operating without speed governor devices.

On the first day of the operation on Thursday, about 50 commuter vehicles whose owners are yet to heed the compulsory policy, were impounded in the City of Kigali.

“Majority of the vehicles impounded on the first day are cargo trucks and coasters. Owners of vehicles under the categories as set out under the Presidential Order are advised to respect the law because it was put in place to save lives,” SSP Ndushabandi said. Read more

Minister Busingye calls for synergy in Justice sectors

The Minister of Justice, Johnstone Busingye has challenged all players in the Justice sector to work in synergy to avoid overlap of activities. 

This, the minister said, will improve the quality of Justice and further strengthen the rule of law.

He was speaking last Monday at the official launch of the Justice Week at the Ministry of Justice.

Minster Busingye described the Justice sector week as an occasion to show case an array of services provided by different actors and to show good progress made so far compared to the past.

He called upon all players to promote ‘positive’ collaboration among all actors. Read more

Illicit drugs worth Rwf15 million destroyed in Burera

Authorities in Burera District, Thursday, disposed of illicit drugs worth over Rwf15 million in a public exercised presided over by the Governor of Northern Province, Jean Marie Vianney Gatabazi.

The substances were seized from varied traffickers and dealers in operation conducted in the past month.

Present was also the Regional Police Commander-North, Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Jean Baptiste Ntaganira.

Governor Gatabazi observed that although there are increased operations and arrest of dealers, the region continues to be used as both a trafficking route through porous borders as well as destination, and called for strengthened proactive policing to report dealers. Read more

Gisagara: Police seize 14 bales of smuggled clothes

The Revenue Protection Police (RPU) impounded a vehicle in Gisagara District that was transporting bales of smuggled clothes.

The vehicle was headed to Kigali, according to RPU, where it was supposed to deliver the bales.

According to Chief Inspector of Police (CIP) Bonavanture Karekezi, the Police spokesperson for the Southern region, the goods were seized on March 19, in Musha sector.

He explained that RPU had received information about the smuggled goods and the vehicle that was being used, and laid an impromptu roadblock. Read more

Eight narcotics suppliers arrested

The ongoing crackdown on major suppliers of narcotic drugs by the Anti-Narcotics Unit (ANU) led to the arrest of eight people said to be part of the ring.

At least six of the suspects were arrested on Sunday in Kicukiro District. Another drug dealer was arrested in the same district the previous day.

According to Chief Inspector of Police (CIP) Marie Gorett Umutesi, one of the suppliers arrested in the Sunday operation in Kicukiro identified as Jean de Dieu Uwamungu was found in possession of 3, 350 pellets of cannabis.

Another suspected supplier identified as Innocent Ndayisenga alias Ganda, 36, was taken into custody on March 16, in Rulindo District, Shyorongi Sector, Bugaragara Cell in Gatwa Village with 4000 rolls of cannabis. Read more

Handball Championship: Police thrash UR-CASS

Police Handball Club thrashed University of Rwanda-College of Arts and Social Sciences (UR-CASS) 44-11, in a game played this Saturday.

It was Day Six of the National Handball Championship as the record seven-time and defending champions maintained the unbeaten run with 18 maximum points.

Tuiyishimire Zachalie and Cpl. Mutuyinama Gilbert scored 13 and 5 goals for the enforcers, respectively.

The men’s championship features twelve clubs polled in two groups. 

Police Handball Club features in the Western division alongside Munyove of Rusizi District, ES Gisenyi formerly College Inyemeramihigo, UR-CASS and ES Kigoma. Read more
