Kwibuka23: Rwandan peacekeepers commemorate
The Rwandan police and military peacekeepers serving under the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS), Abyei (UNSFA) and Haiti (MINUSTAH), on Friday, joined the rest of Rwandans and friends of Rwanda to pay tribute to over one millions innocent lives that perished during the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi.
The peacekeepers were joined by government officials, peacekeepers from others countries, faith-based groups and residents in the 23rdcommemoration activities, which were characterized by the walk against Genocide, prayers and speeches that focused mainly on how the Genocide was planned, executed, stopped, and Rwanda’s transformation process. Kwibuka23: CAR Speaker of Parliament pays homage to Genocide victims
The Central African Republic (CAR) Speaker of Parliament, Kalim Mekasou, has said that Rwanda's success in unifying and reconciling citizens after the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi presents the best approach to building unified and peaceful African continent.
The Speaker was, yesterday, speaking in the capital Bangui where he joined Rwandan peacekeepers serving under United Nations Multidimensional Integrated Stabilisation Mission in CAR (MINUSCA) in the 23rd commemoration of the 1994 Genocide against Tutsi. It was also attended by the Prime Minister of CAR, Simplice Sarandji.
“These dates remind us how the international community abandoned Rwanda; I am grateful to President Paul Kagame for the efforts he has invested in reuniting people of Rwanda, rebuilding the country and contributing tremendously to restoration of people across the world,” Mr. Mekasou said. Read more
Rwanda’s security is assured – Minister Busingye
The Minister of Justice, Johnston Busingye said that Rwanda’s security remains intact and called for the continued partnership at all levels in sustaining what has been achieved.
The Minister made the remarks while officiating at a one-day Police-Media interaction session held at the Rwanda National Police headquarters under the theme: "Strengthening Partnership for Quality Service Delivery.”
The session is held on a quarterly basis. Its aim is to create a permanent platform for the engagement of the media and the police.
The Minister said that the media is a strong partner in ensuring security in the country; however, he called for a paradigm shift from crime prevention to sensitizing Rwandans to comply with the law.
“Professional journalism is about serving the interest of the people when it comes to crime prevention and compliance with the law… your commitment to public safety is highly valued,” the Minister said. Read more

IGP urges heads of motorcycle cooperatives on stronger partnership in fighting crime
The Inspector General of Police (IGP) Emmanuel K. Gasana held a meeting with heads and security personnel of motorcycle cooperatives, and challenges them to streamline their services and their role in combating crime.
The Police Chief reminded them that their services are in the interest of the people and development but not to sabotage the well being of the people.
“Security is integral in your business, and your business should in the same way be integral to safety and security of the people,” IGP Gasana said, urging them to identify and report either their members or other individuals that could be involved in criminal activities. Read more
RNP deploys second FPU contingent to South Sudan
At approximately 8:40am on Tuesday, a plane carrying 144 Rwanda National Police (RNP) officers left Kigali International Airport bound for Juba where they are to serve under the auspice of United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS).
The officers, who left aboard the national flag carrier – RwandAir –, constitute a Formed Police Unit (FPU) contingent of 160 under RWAFPU II-1, an additional force that joins RWAFPU II hybrid of 240 officers. There are also 29 other Rwandan officers working as ‘Police Advisors’ under UNMISS
RWAFPU II-1, which includes 26 female officers, is headed by Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Bosco Rangira as its contingent commander. Read more
UN Police Commissioner welcomes new Rwandan peacekeepers to Juba
The Police Commissioner for the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS), Commissioner of Police (CP) Bruce Munyambo received a newly deployed Rwandan Police contingent that will be conducting their peacekeeping operations in Juba for the next 12 months.
While welcoming the new force, CP Munyambo informed them of the general security situation in South Sudan, friendly forces on the ground and other UN stakeholders.
He reminded them to work within the UN standards and UNMISS in particular, and ensure teamwork with other peacekeeping forces. Read more
Northern Province Governor calls for strengthened Irondo
The Governor of Northern Province, Jean Claude Musabyimana, while addressing over 800 residents of Gatebe and Bungwe sectors of Burera District, urged them to join efforts in all community policing activities to effectively deal with crimes that still exist in the area.
The governor urged residents to enhance their partnership with police and other security organs in ensuring that their communities are crime-free. Read more
ACP Rutaganira challenges Kayonza residents to lead in fight against illicit drugs
The Eastern Region Police Commander (RPC), Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Dismas Rutaganira met with hundreds of residents of Kabare Sector in Kayonza District and urged them to take a lead in fighting drug trafficking.
He said that "ownership" is a great tool in identifying, reporting and arresting drug dealers. He advised residents to avoid drugs saying that, “It is a trap against success... there is no happiness but consequences.” Read more
ADEPR’s anti illicit drugs campaign goes to Nyagatare
The ongoing campaign by the Association of Pentecostal Churches in Rwanda (ADEPR) to raise awareness against illicit drugs, continued in Nyagatare District on March 5 where about 5000 church members and residents joined in a walk against the vice.
The campaign focuses on fighting trafficking, sell and use especially among the young people.
The walk against illicit drugs, which was also attended by police and local leaders, commenced from the church parish in Barija through Nyagatare town and ended at the District Police Unit (DPU) where messages of community policing were delivered.
They carried placards with messages on dangers of abusing psychotropic substances. Read more
Police foil hardware robbery
Police in Gasabo District thwarted a robbery attempt at hardware shops at Kinamba in Gisozi Sector.
The foiled break-in was a response to a call by a passerby reporting a robbery in progress
“The crackdown force responded to the call and indeed they found a robbery in progress. The suspects, one identified as Illdephonse Bizumukiza and his accomplice had broken into one of the hardware shops belonging to Isaac Bizimana and were at the time loading the valuables in his (Bizumukiza) pickup vehicle RAA 184 J,” said Supt. 12 arrested over missing ‘One Laptop per Child’ in Eastern Province
At least twelve heads of schools and teachers were arrested in the Eastern Province following police investigations into alleged theft of computers under One Laptop per Child (OLPC) programme.
Eight of the suspects were arrested in Rwamagana while four others were arrested in Gatsibo.
245 computers were reported missing in Gatsibo and 139 others in Rwamagana. Over 1000 one laptop per child computers were not accounted for in the Eastern Province alone. Read more
