Gerayo Amahoro campaign taken to higher institutions of learning

Rwanda National Police (RNP) extended the road safety awareness campaign dubbed Gerayo Amahoro to higher institutions of learning as part of the strengthened measures to promote road safety.

On Wednesday, the campaign was extended to students of Kigali Institute of Management (KIM) as RNP and partners in road safety continue to reach out to all categories of road users to abide by and be responsive to road safety rules and regulations.

The focus has shifted to higher institutions of learning after covering hundreds of primary and secondary schools in different parts of the country. Read more

RUBAVU: Youth conduct road safety awareness

On Thursday, members of Rwanda Youth Volunteers in Community Policing, commercial motorcyclists and cyclists of Nyakariba Sector, Rubavu District came together to add their voices in this campaign.

The three groups held a 5km "Walk for Road Safety" to educate local communities on safer road usage. Read more

ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION: Nyamagabe residents warned against deforestation


Communities living near gazetted forests in Nyamagabe District have been called upon to desist from unlawful acts of deforestation, instead conserve them.

On Friday, two people identified as Laurent Habiyaremye, 40, and Francois Munyakazi, 38, were arrested while cutting trees for burning charcoal in a protected forest located in Kitabi Sector, Mujuga cell in Gasasa village.

Chief Inspector of Police (CIP) Sylvestre Twajamahoro, the Police spokesperson for the Southern region, said that people, especially those residing near protected forests encroach on the forests to cut trees for construction, timber, charcoal burning and for sale. Read more

Police urges against illegal and risky practices


Rwanda National Police (RNP) appealed to the general public to exercise precautionary measures against disasters and to desist from any practices that put their lives at risk.

The call follows an incident on Thursday in Nyamagabe District, where five people, who had sneaked into a rock tunnel to pray, drowned following heavy downpour.

The incident occurred in Kamuhirwa Village, Ngoma Cell in Cyanika Sector where 10 people had stealthily gone to pray at the backdrop of several warnings against such risky beliefs’ practices.

All the deceased are residents of Kirambi Cell, Nyagisozi Sector in Nyanza District. They include a mother identified as Jeannette Mukeshimana and her one-year-old daughter. Read more

RUTSIRO: Police seize 6,000 pieces of smuggled polythene bags


Police in Rutsiro District seized 30 cartons (6, 000 pieces) of banned non-biodegradable plastic bags, on Thursday.

The polythene bags were impounded at Police checkpoint mounted in Ruhango Sector from the suspected trafficker identified as Denis Niyonsaba, 22.

According to Chief Inspector of Police (CIP) Bonaventure Karekezi, the Police spokesperson for Western region, the vehicle was stopped at the Police checkpoint along Rubavu-Karongi highway, for normal security checks.

“Police officers were conducting their regular duties when they stopped the public vehicle; Niyonsaba was on board. When they checked in the luggage of passengers they found 30 cartons of plastic bags concealed in the luggage that belonged to Niyonsaba. He was trafficking the polythene bags to Karongi,” CIP Karekezi explained. Read more

RNP rolls out campaigns on Fire safety in the Eastern Province


The Rwanda National Police (RNP) Fire and Rescue bmBrigade (FRB) conducted a campaign on fire safety precautions to over 900 students and their teachers of Nyagatare secondry schools in Nyagatare district, Eastern province.

The move aims at enlightening citizens on fire safety precautions and prevention of fire outbreaks in their homes and working areas. Read more
