[PHOTOS]: Police High Council: Fighting corruption take centre stage

The Rwanda National Police High Council (PHC) resolved to strengthen efforts against graft, illicit drugs and preventing road traffic accidents.

These are some of the resolutions reached by the Council, which convened yesterday at the General Headquarters in Kacyiru

Police High Council is the supreme organ of RNP that convenes quarterly to partly lay out priorities to be undertaken to further professionalize the force in light of the evolving policing landscape.

Police in fresh campaign on safety use of crosswalks

Rwanda National Police (RNP) launched a sustained road safety campaign on Monday, focusing on safe usage of crosswalks.

The countrywide campaign aims at promoting pedestrian rights and preventing speeding, one of the traffic violations affecting pedestrians. 

Speeding is also one of the main causes of traffic accidents around the world and the leading cause of fatalities in Rwanda in particular.

The all-out campaign will see, every morning and evening, Police officers engaging different road users on highways across the country on safety usage of road, particularly on respect to pedestrian rights.

On the first day of the campaign on Monday, Police officers took to major routes in the City of Kigali.

Senior Supt. Jean Marie Ndushabandi, the spokesperson for Traffic and Road Safety department, said the campaign will be conducted throughout the year to "influence behavioural change." Read more

Eight arrested in crackdown on narcotics suppliers

Intensified Police operations have arrested at least eight people said to be part of the gang that traffics and supplies cannabis especially in the City of Kigali. 

Police said the suspected drug dealers were arrested separately in the last one week, either in Kigali or on highways as they headed to the capital with varied quantities of cannabis. 

They were paraded to the media at Gikondo Police station on Monday.

One of the suapects, Cyprien Ikishaka told the media that he was the link between major traffickers and local retailers. 

Ikishaka was arrested last Saturday in Nemba Sector of Gakenke District with over 10kgs of cannabis. 

He said he was at the time delivering them to one of his usual clients identified as Claude Nzabandora. Read more

Burera: 6000 sachets of illicit gin seized

Police and local leaders in Burera District seized at least 6000 sachets of Sky Blue from suspected traffickers.

The substances classified as narcotic drugs in Rwanda were seized on March 9, in Munini Village of Kagitega Cell, Cyanika Sector. They were concealed in 10 sacks.

Chief Inspector of Police (CIP) Alexis Rugigana, the Police spokesperson for the Northern region, said that the operation was conducted with local leaders in Cyanika following credible information provided by a resident about the suspected traffickers.

"Unfortunately, traffickers abandoned the sacks of Blue Sky on seeing the Police, and runaway but we know who they are and the search for them continues," CIP Rugigana said.

Police and local leaders in Burera District seized at least 6000 sachets of Sky Blue from suspected traffickers.

Women's Day: Police women football team win 'Mayor's Cup'

The Rwanda National Police (RNP) women football team, on Friday, overcame City of Kigali women team 4-3 on penalty shootout to win the Mayor's Cup. 

The cup was in line with the International Women's Day celebrated every March 8.

It was the first silverware for the law force's women team.

Police Constable (PC) Joselyne Nyiraneza put RNP in the lead midway in first half to make it 1-0 before the first period. Read more
