President Kagame calls for joint efforts to fund healthcare in Africa
President Paul Kagame urged governments and members of the private sector from across Africa to work more collectively to fund healthcare systems on the continent.
He delivered the message while speaking at the African Leadership Meeting on Investing in Health which took place at the 32nd Ordinary Summit of the African Union Summit in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
President Kagame chaired the meeting which was attended by Prime Minister Erna Solberg of Norway, President Mahamadou Issoufou of Niger, and United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres among other.
“We will get better results if we work together as a continent, for example, cheaper prices by negotiating and procuring as a bloc. We also have a lot to learn from each others’ experiences implementing programmes such as universal health insurance and community-based healthcare,” Kagame told delegates at the meeting. Read more
PM Ngirente calls for stronger Police cooperation against continental common security threats
The Right. Hon. Prime Minister Dr. Edouard Ngirente said that stronger cooperation among law enforcement agencies in Africa is inevitable if the increasing threats to continental development are to be addressed.
The Prime Minister made the remarks on February 5, while officially opening the three-day 24th Interpol African Region Conference in Kigali.
About 300 participants from across the continent including Chiefs of Police as well as Interpol secretariat are taking part in the conference that seeks to discuss ways of tackling specific security threats affecting the African continent.
Notably among the threats on the table of discussion include illicit trafficking of drugs and pharmaceutical, terrorism and maritime piracy, trafficking in human beings, child exploitation, financial crimes and corruption. Read more
Security guarantees development, Minister Busingye
The Minister of Justice and Attorney General, Johnston Busingye said that where people are reassured of their security and have no fear of crime development is guaranteed.
He added that the search for a common ground for fighting transnational, organized and emerging crimes is the most important contemporary global policing concern.
The Minister was speaking at the closing of the 24th Interpol African Regional Conference and the Table Top Exercise Cyber Track II, which climaxed in Kigali, on February 7. Read more
RNP, CoK in Umuganda to promote security and hygiene
Rwanda National Police (RNP) and the City of Kigali have launched Umuganda-- communal work--activities aimed at promoting security and hygiene in the capital.
The communal activities that started in Gasabo District this Saturday are in line with the 8th edition of the security and hygiene campaign to strengthen the ideals of cleaner, greener and safer Kigali.
RNP and CoK were joined by thousands of city dwellers to clear shrubs in Rusororo Sector that used to be hideout for wrongdoers but also bleeding ground for mosquitoes.
The Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIGP) in charge of Administration and Personnel, Juvenal Marizamunda, while addressing the residents after the exercise, reminded them that ensuring safety and security starts with an individual where they live or move by reporting anything suspicious or people they suspect to be indulging in criminal activities. Karongi: Fishermen urged to respect the law
Superintendent of Police (SP) Jean Pierre Gatabazi the Karongi District Police Commander (DPC) warned fishermen on Lake Kivu to desist from conducting illegal business.
The District Police commander also urged fishermen and those involved in the transportation for goods and persons to wear water protective gear such as life jackets. Read more
Musanze: Man held over impersonation
Police in Musanze District, on February 6, arrested a 47-year-old man for allegedly impersonating Rwanda Revenue Authority (RRA) officials with intent to defraud unsuspecting people.
Chief Inspector of Police (CIP) Alex Rugigana, the Police spokesperson for the Northern region, said that the suspect; Emmanuel Ndagijimana had targeted a man, whose vehicle had been impounded over fraud and drug trafficking related offenses.
"On February 6, Ndagijimana, who was posing as an official from RRA, approached a man in Cyuve sector whose vehicle had been impounded over fraud; he told the would-be victim that he was in position to bail his vehicle," Rugigana said.
According to Rugigana, the suspect demanded Rwf500, 000 for the service. Read more
President Kagame to RDF High Command: Keep being exemplary to the nation
President Paul Kagame called on the Rwanda Defence Force (RDF) to keep working tirelessly and continue serving as an example to Rwandan institutions and citizens.
Kagame, who is the Commander-in-Chief of RDF, was yesterday addressing the Force’s High Command Council at the Rwanda Military Academy in Gako.
In his address to the RDF top brass, he urged them to maintain and upscale the hard-earned security and contribution to the development of Rwanda.
“To all those with whom we share this noble job, we should work tirelessly and be upstanding as an example for all other institutions and all Rwandans to emulate. All this towards the development of the Rwanda we want,” he said. Read more
Burera hold mass campaign against illicit drugs in schools
The District Police Unit (DPU) of Burera conducted an all-out campaign on Tuesday sensitizing students on the dangers of abusing illicit drugs and child pregnancies.
The awareness that also seeks to tighten the fight against psychotropic substances and stiffening operations against suppliers was extended to over 6000 students in all the 17 sectors of Burera.
Chief Inspector of Police (CIP) Alex Rugigana, the Police spokesperson for the Northern region, said that the campaign was spearheaded by Police stations and local leaders in all the sectors.
“Understanding that Burera is one of the routes used by drug traffickers especially those dealing in assorted illicit gin such as Kanyanga, Chief Waragi and Zebra gin, the DPU launched this campaign to educate the young people on the dangers of abusing these contrabands, enlighten them on their community policing right to report dealers; it is a deliberate campaign to tighten grip on traffickers,” CIP Rugigana. Suspected drug traffickers arrested in Nyabihu
Two suspected drug traffickers were arrested on February 5, in Mukamira Sector of Nyabihu District with combined 3794 pellets of cannabis.
Theogene Harerimana, 30, and Gaudence Murekatete, 40, were taken into custody following credible information provided by residents.
“Residents of Mukamira had reported a ring of drug dealers that traffic them from Rubavu District and distribute to retailers in Nyabihu, Musanze and in the City of Kigali,” Chief Inspector of Police (CIP) Innocent Gasasira, the Police spokesperson for the Western region, said.
“On February 5, when residents saw Harerimana boarding a motorcycle with a suspicious luggage, the called the Police in Mukamira, who arrested him; when they checked his luggage, they found it was stashed with 2024 rolls of cannabis,” CIP Gasasira explained. Read more
Heroes Cup: Police Handball Club win it again
The 2019 Heroes Day Cup tournament (Handball category) ended last Sunday in Gicumbi District with Police Handball Club successfully retaining title.
The defending champions registered a hard fought 29-28 win over APR in the finals to take the crown.
The two-day tournament brought together all the eleven handball teams in the national championship.
Mutuyimana Gilbert, Tuyishime Zachalie and Rwamanywa Viateur put up an impressive show to ensure that Police remain a hard team to beat.
Coach Inspector of Police (IP) Antoine Ntabanganyimana, thanked the "determination and teamwork" of his players.
"The final was surely an entertaining and hard match; it required reading the game, strong focus, determination throughout, and this paid," IP Ntabanganyimana said.
APR came second in the tournament while ES Kigoma of Ruhango came third.
