UN intermission retreat opens in Kigali
 
The fourth UN intermission retreat for Heads of Police Component (HoPC) from all missions across Africa opened on Wednesday at the Rwanda National Police General Headquarters in Kacyiru to address challenges faced in missions and promote UN best practices.
 
The three-day intermission retreat, the second to be held in Rwanda, brings together Police Commissioners and top officials from MONUSCO (Democratic Republic of Congo), UNAMID (Darfur), UNMISS (South Sudan), UNISFA (Abyei), AMISOM and UNSOM (both from Somalia) as well as the UN headquarters and UN Office to the African Union, among others.
 
The Inspector General of Police (IGP) Dan Munyuza, while officially opening the retreat, said that the UN Police plays key role in protection of civilians, ensuring their safety and security, and acts as a substitute for host-state police capacity to prevent and detect crime, protect life and property, and maintain public order. South Sudan Police delegation visit RNP

The Deputy Inspector General (DIGP) in charge of Administration and Personnel, Juvenal Marizamunda, on Monday, received a delegation from South Sudan National Police Services (SSNPS), who are visiting Rwanda National Police (RNP) for a benchmarking mission.
 
The officials headed by Maj. Gen. Garang Akuei Diing, the director for finance in SSNPS, are visiting RNP particularly to learn from its areas of welfare and development.
 
“RNP and SSNPS enjoy good relations and our Heads of State have set a line for us to build on. We have a memorandum of understanding that guides us in various areas of policing including exchange of information and training,” DIGP Marizamunda said. Read more
 
Gerayo Amahoro: Special hire taxis urged on road discipline
 
Special hire taxi-motorists have been urged to respect traffic regulations and consider the repercussions of abusing road safety standards to their livelihood.
 
The call was made on Wednesday as Rwanda National Police (RNP) met with taxi-drivers across the country as part of the ongoing year-long road safety campaign dubbed ‘Gerayo Amahoro.’
 
Commissioner of Police (CP) Rafiki Mujiji, the Commissioner for Traffic Road and Safety department, while addressing special hire motorists in Remera, Gasabo District, reminded them of their role in national security, which he said include respect for road safety standards to prevent road carnage.
 
He said that at least one person die every day due to accidents mainly caused by human behaviors. Read more
 
UN Heads of Police Component react on impact of intermission retreat

Heads of Police component from various peacekeeping missions in Africa have said that coming together every year provides a better chance to share best practices and to address major challenges faced in their respective missions.
 
Their reactions came on heels of the fourth intermission retreat of top UN Police officials, which ended this Friday at the Rwanda National Police (RNP) General Headquarters in Kacyiru.

UNMISS Police Commissioner, Unaisi Lutu Vuniwaqa, said: “The last three days have been very constructive; the retreat was well organized and it addressed specific challenges at hand, we shared lessons and best practices. This will help us when we go back to strategize our mission implementations.”

Rwanda maintains three Formed Police Unit (FPU) contingents of 560 officers under the UN Mission in South Sudan, including a female dominated contingent under the command of Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Teddy Ruyenzi. Read more
 
Gerayo Amahoro: Pedestrians at high risk on roads, Police says

Pedestrians are much more likely to be injured during road crashes than any other road users, Rwanda National Police said. It said that more pedestrians are killed or maimed on Rwandan roads than all motorists’ accidents registered combined.
 
This was revealed on Friday as RNP engaged various road users across the country on the rights of pedestrians, as part of the on-going 52-week road safety awareness and education campaign across the country.
 
Police officers flocked roads around the country to sensitize and educate road users on the meaning of various traffic signs in respect to rights of pedestrians, and how to safely use the road including use of zebra crossings. Read more
 
Gerayo Amahoro campaign take centre stage during Umuganda

The year-long road safety campaign dubbed Gerayo Amahoro (arrive safely), launched a fortnight ago was part of the discussions this Saturday in communities after the monthly communal work--Umuganda--across the country.
 
The 52-week campaign is a deliberate move by Rwanda National Police (RNP) and other government and private institutions as well as transport agencies to curb road carnage largely blamed on human behaviours.
 
In the City of Kigali, the campaign was conducted in all the 35 sectors of the capital where Police officers took time to educate communities on road safety standards and rights of every road user. Read more
 
Gicumbi: Vehicle impounded trafficking illicit gin

A vehicle loaded with assorted illicit gin was impounded on Friday in Gicumbi District.
 
The vehicle, Toyota Corolla registration number RAA 902, was intercepted by the Police in Byumba Sector with about 250 cartons of Chief Waragi and jerrycans of a crude gin commonly known as Kanyanga.
 
Chief Inspector of Police (CIP) Alexis Rugigana, the Police spokesperson for the Northern region, said that the vehicle was intercepted at about 2:30 am.
 
"The vehicle was headed to Ntarabana Sector in Rulindo District from Kaniga and it was intercepted midway in Byumba," CIP Rugigana said.
 
"This was in response to a call from an informer earlier that night about the same vehicle which they saw loading boxes and jerrycans of assorted illicit gin," he added. Read more
 
Peacekeeping Police chiefs pay tribute to Genocide victims

Heads of Police component from across all peacekeeping missions in Africa as well as other top UN officials, on Thursday visited Kigali Genocide Memorial Centre in Gisozi to pay respect to more than one million people killed during the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi.
 
The Police Commissioners for the UN and AU backed missions and senior officials from the UN headquarters in New York are in Kigali since Wednesday for the 4th intermission retreat.

“Working as UN Police Advisor, I know Rwandan Police peacekeepers are among the best-of-the-best in terms of promoting good community policing and they create an environment of living together where they are deployed... they learn from Rwanda's experience,” Carrilho stated. Read more
