Youth volunteers in a mass campaign against illicit drugs

Rwanda Youth Volunteers in Community Policing (RYVCP) continued the campaign against narcotic drugs over the weekend to reinforce national efforts against the vice.

The nationwide campaign launched last week in the City of Kigali was on Saturday extended to the Eastern Province, particularly in the districts of Kirehe, Nyagatare, and Kayonza as they engaged the fellow young generation  

In Nyagatare, the awareness was characterized by a walk against drugs that brought together about 600 students of Nyagatare Secondary School and Bright Academy.

Nyagatare is mapped as one of the districts in the Eastern Province used as the transit route especially for illicit gin.

Contrabands including 892 boxes of Zebra Gin, 77 liters of Kanyanga, 45 boxes of Zebra Waragi among others, seized in various Police operations were disposed of as part of the campaign. Read more

Fighting illicit drugs: Over 2000 liters of substances seized

Strengthened operations against illicit drugs seized over 2000 liters of locally made substances, in different parts of the country.

The operations were conducted jointly with local leaders based on information provided by the People, Police said.

The substances with different brand names were seized in Nyarugenge, Huye, Gisagara, Kamonyi, and Nyaruguru districts. At least ten people all caught red-handed, either distilling or selling the substances.

In Kigali, Police spokesperson for the Central region, Chief Inspector of Police (CIP) Emmanuel Kayigi said that “operations will continue alongside awareness campaigns to be both on the preventive side and to arrest defiant dealers.”

CIP Bonaventure Twizere Karekezi, the Southern region Police spokesperson, also said that “fighting drug-related crimes remains among major security operations and awareness.” Read more

Musanze: Governor Gatabazi calls for family harmony

The Governor of the Northern Province, Jean  Marie Vianney Gatabazi called upon residents of Musanze District to avoid family conflicts are to live in harmony.

The Governor made the call, yesterday while addressing a community meeting that brought together residents of Kinigi and Cyuve sectors.

The Governor, who was accompanied by the Regional Police Commander, appealed to the residents to be proactive in security matters.

"Domestic conflicts affects family growth; you spend much of the time in quarrels rather than utilizing it in family development activities like farming, planning businesses and planning for your children," the Governor told the residents.

He also advised them against polygamous practices, adultery consuming illicit substances and drunkenness, one of the things he said fuel domestic conflicts. Read more

Kirehe: Fraudsters arrested

Two men were arrested on Thursday in Kirehe District for allegedly guising as employees of Energy Utility Corporation Limited (EUCL) and conning unsuspecting residents.

Chief Inspector of Police (CIP) Theobald Kanamugire, the Police spokesperson for the Eastern region, said that the operation to arrest the duo was conducted jointly by Police and investigators in Kirehe.

He identified the suspects as Jean Pierre Rutayisire, 28, and Jean de Dieu Bakundakumenya, 28, who was arrested in Nasho Sector, Rubirizi Cell at about 5 pm as they attempted to defraud some residents. Read more

Nyamasheke: Students enlightened on 'child rights'

Students of Bunyenga Secondary School in Nyamasheke District, were on Wednesday tutored on rights of children and urged to break silence on any sort of child abuse they experience or witness.

The District Community Liaison Officer (DCLO) of Nyamasheke, Inspector of Police (IP) Philippe Abizeye told the students that they have the right to basic needs like education, to know or have parents, healthcare and shelter, among others.

"Corporal punishment of any sort, denying you education, hard labor activities, luring you in sexual or drug-related malpractices are all examples of child abuse," IP Abizeye said.

He further enlightened them on various laws related to child protection.

The DCLO also urged them to desist from abusing illicit drugs and taking alcoholic beverages.

Under the law, alcoholic drinks are prohibited to persons less than 18 years and anyone that offers alcoholic beverages to anyone in this age bracket is also prosecuted," he said. Read more
