[PHOTOS]: Gov't, faith-based organisations in fresh drive against narcotic drugs
Government institutions including ministries as well as faith-based organisations and the civil society, on Tuesday, conducted a joint campaign to raise awareness against illicit drugs in Gasabo District.
Over 1200 young people turned up for the sensitization campaign held at the Independent University of Kigali (ULK).
The campaign brought together ministries of Health, Youth, Gender and Family Promotion, Rwanda Biomedical Centre as well as Rwanda National Police.
The continuous exercise also including the Ministry of Local Government was launched in December last year.
It combines aspects of prevention and killing the local market, strengthening partnership against drug dealers, identifying and rehabilitating addicts.
Statistics indicate that 18 percent of all the 3941 cases recorded last year were related to drugs. The report further shows that a total of 4149 people were arrested in drug related crimes in the same period, with over 71 percent of them aged between 18 and 35 years. Read more
Gasabo youth in anti-crime drive
The youth in Gasabo District have started sensitization campaigns especially focusing on fighting illicit drugs.
The campaign, which started on July 28, in Gisozi Sector, is spearheaded by members of Rwanda Youth Volunteers in Community Policing (RYVCP) in Gasabo.
The campaign in Gisozi attracted over 600 young people. It is being held under the theme: “Let us fight drug abuse.” The campaign is designed to supplement the ongoing national initiatives to combat the scourge.
While addressing the youth, Chief Inspector of Police (CIP) Irene Umuhozari, the District Community Liaison Office (DCLO), thanked them for the community policing effort and pledged Rwanda National Police’s support in their security activities. Read More
Aspiring driver arrested for attempted bribery
Police in Rwamagana District are holding one Sultan Murwanashyaka for allegedly attempting to give a bribe so as to get a driver's license.
Murwanashyaka was taken into custody on Wednesday while trying to give a bribe of Rwf100, 000 to a police officer.
He had failed the provisional exam when he reached to the officer in charge to seduce him with the bribe, Chief Inspector of Police (CIP) Theobald Kanamugire, the Eastern region Police spokesperson, said.
"The officer informed his superiors about Murwanashyaka's criminal move, and he was arrested in the act," he said.
The suspect is currently detained at Kigabiro Police station. Read More
Gatsibo: Commercial motorcyclists urged to fight drug trafficking
Commercial motorcyclists operating in Gatsibo District have been called upon to be vigilant and desist from facilitating drug dealers.
They were urged to join efforts in fighting drug trafficking by reporting drug dealers including those attempting to use their transport services.
The call was made recently by the mayor of Gatsibo Richard Gasana. The meeting was also attended by local residents. Read More
Illegal mineral trader arrested in Nyagatare
A man suspected of conducting an illegal mineral business has been arrested in Nyagatare District.
Police said that Richard Ndengeyinka was taken into custody mid this week was found with 100 kilogrammes of cassetirite.
Chief Inspector of Police (CIP) Theobald Kanamugire, the Eastern region Police spokesperson, said that the suspect was on the list of illegal dealers in minerals.
It is alleged that Ndengeyinka had received about Rwf800, 000 from one Vestine Mukandanga, a mineral trade with a promise to supply her with legal minerals. Read More
Nyamasheke: Fishermen urged to report unlawful acts in water bodies
Police in Nyamasheke District reach out to 82 fishermen operating in Lake Kivu and fishmongers and urged them to fight and report any criminal and illegal acts committed in or through the lake.
Inspector of Police (IP) Philippe Abizeye, the District Community Liaison Officer (DCLO) of Nyamasheke, while addressing them in Kagano Sector, recently, observed that there are some people who use the water body to traffic drugs, smuggle goods or engage in illegal fishing activities.
“When you are conducting your businesses in this lake it also becomes your responsibility to ensure that no one uses it in criminals or unlawful activities and work with security organs to ensure that wrongdoers are arrested,” the DCLO said. Read More
