Over 230 Rwanda Police peacekeepers in South Sudan decorated with UN service medals

The United Nations, on Thursday, November 5, awarded 237 Rwandan Police peacekeepers serving in its mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) with the medal of service excellence.

The decorated hybrid force under Rwanda Formed Police Unit-One (RWAFPU-1) was deployed in Malakal, Upper Nile State in December last year where they are largely charged with the protection of civilians in internally displaced camps, UN personnel, security of key installations and humanitarian assistance, among others. PEACEKEEPING: Rwanda rotates female-dominated Police contingent in South Sudan

Rwanda National Police (RNP), on Wednesday, November 4, rotated its female-dominated Formed Police Unit-Three (FPU-3) contingent of 160 officers serving under the UN Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS).

It's the third rotation of the contingent pledged by President Paul Kagame during the UN Leaders’ Summit on Peacekeeping Operations in 2015, following the maiden unit deployed in June 2018.

The newly deployed contingent under Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Jeannette Masozera left early in the morning to replace the unit commanded by SSP Jackline Urujeni, which safely returned home later in the afternoon after its 18 months tour-of-duty. Read more

Muhanga: Residents warned against illegal mining

Residents of Muhanga District have been warned against illegal mining practices, which in some cases result into loss of lives.

The caution was issued by officials on Saturday, November 7, following a fatal illegal mining incident, in which five people died.

The fatal incident occurred on Friday, November 6, at about 6:30pm when five people, including a mother and her four-month child, were buried by landslides as they were conducting illegal mining activities in a coltan closed concession located in Gahabwa village, Nyamirama cell in Muhanga Sector of Muhanga District. Kigali: Police recovers stolen money

Police in City of Kigali recovered Frw516, 000, which is part of the money that was stolen from a woman in Ruhondo Village, Nyabugogo Cell in Kigali Sector of Nyarugenge District, on Thursday night.

Two men allegedly ambushed Estone Himbaza at about 9pm on Thursday and snatched her handbag, which contained Frw688, 000, a smart phone, electronic banking device and other personal particulars.

Chief Inspector of Police (CIP) Sylvestre Twajamahoro, the Police spokesperson for the City of Kigali said that the money and other stolen documents were recovered from one of the suspects identified as Emmanuel Hakizimana, who was also taken into custody. Read more


HUYE: Youth volunteers urged to enhance crime prevention

Members of Rwanda Youth Volunteers in Community Policing (RYVCP) in Huye District were reminded to strengthen their activities in raising awareness, fighting and preventing lawlessness.

The call was made by the Southern Region Police Commander, Chief Superintendent of Police (CSP) Innocent Kanyamihigo during the meeting with about 200 coordinators and representatives of youth volunteers in the district, held on Monday, November 2, in Ngoma Sector. Read more


RUBAVU: Anti-Narcotics Unit arrests a major drug dealer

The Rwanda National Police (RNP) Anti-Narcotics Unit (ANU) arrested another major trafficker and distributor of cannabis in Rubavu District.

Jean Bosco Twibanire Basigeho, 38, was arrested red-handed on October 30 in Bisizi Village, Rukoko Cell of Rubavu Sector with a bundle of 2,500 pellets of cannabis. 

His arrest came just a day after another major supplier identified as Vincent Nzabonimpa, 31, was also arrested by ANU in the same district in Busasamana Sector with 7,500 pellets of the ‘very severe drug. Read more


Vigilance key to fighting currency counterfeit

On Saturday, October 31, a shop attendant in Rubona trading centre in Kibirizi Cell, Rubengera Sector of Karongi District apprehended and handed to the Police a man, who was found in possession of counterfeit money amounting to Frw40,000.

According to Chief Inspector of Police (CIP) Bonaventure Twizere Karekezi, the Police spokesperson of the Western region, Samuel Susuruka was at the time trying to buy a bulb of Frw500 when the shop attendant noticed that a note of Frw2, 000 the former paid was counterfeit. Read more
