Gov’t assess performance of Isange One Stop centres
The ministries of Gender and Family Promotion, Health and Justice, and Rwanda National Police (RNP) on January 6 officially start a countrywide field visit to assess the performance and effectiveness of the scale-up and rehabilitation of Isange One Stop Centres (IOSC) in responding to issues related to gender based violence and child abuse.
During the two-week exercise, the joint field monitoring team will visit all the current 17 established Isange centres situated in district hospitals.
The scale-up of Isange started early last year in Nyagatare District as RNP and other charged institutions seeks to take the holistic services that include free medical, psycho-socio and legal services closer to the people, and to strengthen the campaign against GBV and child abuse.
According to Supt. Shafiga Murebwayire, the coordinator of Isange centres, the joint monitoring team will assess the impact of the centres to area residents and identify existing challenges. Read More…
RNP commends public on security during festive season
The festive season activities and celebrations were organized and held in an orderly, smooth and secure environment with no major incidents, Rwanda National Police has said.
Police spokesperson, Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Celestin Twahirwa said that musical shows, family and religious celebrations as well as movement of people were “conducted in accordance with the law and safely without any disturbance.” Read More…
Police inspects fire fighting readiness in Karongi public facilities
A team of six police officers started a week-long inspection of fire fighting readiness in public facilities within Karongi district.
The aim of the inspection according to the District Community Liaison Officer, Inspector of Police (IP) Jean Baptiste Rutebuka, was to know the status of these facilities, if they have fire extinguishers and other required firefighting kits.
He went on to add that identifying the status also helps the police to identify focus areas when it comes to public sensitizations against fire outbreaks.
“In the last three days, we visited 42 facilities including schools, hotels, markets, petrol station, shops and financial institutions. We have since discovered that most of these facilities either didn’t have fire extinguishers or hadn’t been refilled in a while,” said IP Rutebuka who led the six-man inspection team. Read More…
Community policing made impact in 2015 – ACP Gatare
Just like in previous years, Rwanda National Police (RNP) last year reignited the implementation of its community policing initiatives in different parts of the country all aimed at strengthening and raising awareness against crimes toward sustainable safety and security.
Apart from partnering with the general public, the force also teamed up with other security organs, government and private institutions through joint awareness campaigns and operations, to detect, identify and bring offenders to justice.
According to Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Damas Gatare, the Commissioner for Community Policing in RNP, this partnership contributed enormously to peace and security people living in Rwanda continue to enjoy today.
“The crime prevention activities were characterized by working together with the National Itorero Commission to train the youth in crime prevention, build patriotism, nationalism and hard work,” said ACP Gatare.
“The partnership of Police and public in crime prevention campaigns and also the force’s engagement in human security programmes like; one cow per family, health insurance scheme environmental conservation, explains why the force has won public trust and strong partnership in crime prevention,” he added. Kayonza residents challenged to fight negative propaganda
Residents of Kayonza District were called upon to stand together to fight against any negative propaganda and all forms of action aimed at negating the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi.
The call was made during a meeting held on January 8, in Rwinkwavu Sector and brought together about 1000 residents, Police officers and local leaders.
The Mayor of Kayonza John Mugabo, while speaking to the residents, said that there is a lot to lose in spreading harmful propaganda and genocide ideology adding that “you can never benefited from spreading hatred.” Read More…
Private security firms complete senior managers training course at NPC
The Commandant of the National Police College (NPC), Commissioner of Police (CP) Felix Namuhoranye, urged Private Security Service Providers (PSSP) to priorities on and off job training of their staff as means to ensure standard and professional service delivery.
CP Namuhoranye made the call on January 9 while presiding over the closing of a three-day training of 20 senior managers from private security firms that ended at the National Police College in Musanze District.
He emphasized that service delivery and professionalism can’t be realized if service providers lack modern skills and knowledge, and advanced tools that fit in the current evolving security environment. Read More…
Private security service providers start training
Training of senior managers and investigators of Private Security Service Providers (PSSP) and security supervisors of Rwanda Federation of Taxi Moto operators (FERWACOTAMO) started on January 4, at the National Police College (NPC) and Police Training School (PTS) Gishari, respectively.
The concurrent training conducted by Rwanda National Police (RNP) seeks to strengthen the capabilities and professionalism of participants in their respective areas of security which supplements the overall policing in the country.
While officially opening the three-day training of Senior Managers & Investigators of private security firms, the Commandant of NPC, Commissioner of Police (CP) Felix Namuhoranye said that RNP considers private security service providers as key stakeholders in the protection of people and their property. Man arrested with forged driver’s licence
Police in Nyamasheke District arrested a 22-year old man who was driving using a forged driver’s license.
As part of the routine checks, officers on duty stopped Ernest Sezerano on January 4 in Ruharambuga Sector and asked him for a driving license only to discover that it was a forgery, and was immediately arrested.
Following his arrest, Sezerano confessed to police that he bought the forged permit last year at Rwf250, 000, from a man he claimed he doesn’t remember.
Superintendent of Police (SP) Jean Marie Ndushabandi, the spokesperson of the Traffic and Road Safety department warned that some individuals take advantage of the ignorance of others to con them of their money by selling them forged documents. Read More…
RNP takes child protection campaign to Nyabihu
Police in Nyabihu District urged mothers to take a lead in advancing children’s rights. The call was made during a meeting with about 20 single mothers held on January 5 in Mukamira Sector.
While addressing the mothers, the District Community Liaison officer, Assistant Inspector of Police (AIP) Marie Rose Uwizera, requested for stronger partnership between police and the parents to promote and protect the rights of children.
She explained to them that a child has a right to live, acquire education, good health, shelter, and clothing among others.Read More…
Awareness against abuse of drugs continues in Nyabihu
Police in Nyabihu District sternly warned against making, trafficking and use of narcotic drugs.
The warning followed varied police operations in which narcotics drugs that include 225, 135 sachets of banned Sky Blue gin, 137 kilogrammes of cannabis, 70 litres of Kanyanga and 85 bottles of another illicit drink called kalgazoke were seized from dealers.
During the public destruction of the seized drugs valued at over Rwf60 million over the weekend in Rwanyirangeri of Jaba Cell in Mukamira Sector, the district mayor, Abdoulatif Twahirwa thanked Rwanda National Police for empowering the people to ensure their own safety, which led to the seizure of the destroyed drugs. Combating drug abuse: Burera in high gear
The Rwanda National Police awareness against trafficking and abuse of drugs continued to reap more tangible results in different parts of the country as residents continue to report drug dealers and abusers, leading to their arrest and seizure of illicit substances.
Just two days after police in Nyabihu District seized and destroyed a lot of illicit substances , Burera residents have also stepped in to reignite the fight against drug abuse in the district.
On Wednesday January 6, over 3000 residents of Burera converged in three separate sites – Rusarabuye, Kidaho and Bungwe sectors – to witness the public destruction and awareness against drug abuse.
The destroyed drugs, all banned gin valued at over Rwf30 million include 4931 litres of Kanyanga, 7678 dozens of Blue Sky and 2306 dozens of Hot Waragi. Read More…
Police extends environmental campaign to Kamonyi miners
Rwanda National Police (RNP) on Wednesday reached out to over 50 miners from Karama and Kayenzi sectors in Kamonyi District and encouraged them to play a significant role in protecting the environment and to conduct their mining activities in a manner preserves environment.
While speaking to the miners, the District Police Commander, Supt. Donath Kinani said: “Illegal mining sends toxic feeds into different streams and destroys the environment and the atmosphere terribly.”
“Having a license to mine doesn’t mean that you have the authority to destroy the environment. That licence requires you to conducting your activities in a way that the environment is not threatened. You are therefore expected to be champions of environmental protection and always plant as many trees as possible around your concessions,” Supt. Kinani said. Read More…
Two DASSO members in Gasabo arrested for soliciting bribe
Two members of the District Security Support Organ (DASSO) in Gasabo District were arrested for allegedly soliciting a bribe of Rwf200, 000.
Eduard Muhire and Jean Paul Mutaganzwa were arrested red-handed on January 6 in Kacyiru Sector after their superior followed them up following information provided by the would-be victim.
It is alleged that the duo connived to solicit a bribe from a woman, who makes and sells bricks in Kacyiru. Read More…

Police in Gasabo district arrested a 52-year for attempting to bribe a local leader with Rwf10, 000 so that he could illegally build a house.
Vincent Bambonangenda, a resident of Rukiri Cell of Remera sector is alleged to have attempted to bribe the Cell Executive Secretary so as to proceed with construction of a house illegally. Read More…
