UN starts inspection ahead of additional Police peacekeepers in South Sudan
The United Nations started a five-day inspection of Rwandan police contingent of additional 70 officers to join United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS).
A UN official, Annette R Johansen, a Norwegian Individual Police Officer (IPO) from the Formed Police Unite (FPU) coordination office in UNMISS, on January 2 started the inspection ahead of the deployment.
Police spokesperson, ACP Celestin Twahirwa said: “The UN requested that Rwanda prepares another additional force of 70 officers, who will join the already 170 peacekeepers deployed in Malakal.”
“For the UN to request an additional force, it is an indication of the good performance and conduct of Rwandan peacekeepers,” he added. READ MORE
Intercepted Stolen vehicle returned to Ugandan Owner
Rwanda National Police (RNP) handed over a vehicle to a Ugandan businessman, Moses Kananura Ndizeye, after it was intercepted in December last year following Interpol notice.
Police spokesperson, Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Celestin Twahirwa, said that the posh MarkX vehicle registration number UAN 400C was intercepted at Gatuna border post on December 31 as it crossed into Rwanda, after it was found on the international police log of stolen vehicles.
According to the notice, the vehicle had been stolen from Japan. READ MORE
Police foil Rwf30 million bank robbery, four arrested
Rwanda National Police (RNP) is holding four men, who attempted to defraud Kenya Commercial Bank of Rwf30.5 million using a forged cheque.
Police identified the suspects as Gilbert Mazimpaka, the mastermind, Jean Phillipe Makombe and Jean Claude Kayiranga, and a cab driver who was driving the trio.
Police spokesperson, Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Celestin Twahirwa, said Mazimpaka, on Friday at around midday, walked into KCB main branch in the city centre and deposited a forged cheque instructing a transfer of Rwf 30.5million from one of the client’s account, to his account in Bank of Kigali.
“As soon the transfer was authorized, the victim received SMS alert indicating the transfer of the money from his account and hurriedly notified the KCB that he had not made or instructed any transactions, and KCB immediately inform BK and the Police about the shoddy transfer,” said ACP Twahirwa.
“We immediately worked with the banks to have the suspects arrested. Around 2pm, Mazimpaka arrived at BK main branch in a cab with Makombe and Kayiranga, to withdraw the money. Police had already deployed officers, who arrested them as they attempted to withdraw the money,” he added. READ MORE
Nyagatare: Four arrested for attempted bribery
Four men were arrested in Nyagatare District for allegedly attempting to bribe police officers on duty to get away with traffic related offences.
The four men were arrested separately on February 5.
The suspects are identified as Alexandre Turihiwe, Gedeon Bizumutima, Onesphore Rukundo and Jean Paul Rutagarama.
Bizumutima and his driver, Turihiwe, were both arrested in Rukomo Sector as they attempted to bring a traffic police officer with Rwf5000, after their vehicle was found without the compulsory mechanical inspection certificate. READ MORE
How cyclists are leading anti-drug campaign in Kamonyi
A group of 50 Commercial cyclists operating in Runda Sector of Kamonyi District have taken it upon themselves to lead the fight against drug abuse in their neighborhood by using former addicts to educate youth about the dangers of drugs.
Of the 50 cyclists from Twizerane Cooperative 20 are former drug addicts who have since earned a reasonably lifestyle ever since the quit abusing drugs and joined the cooperative.
During a meeting held on February 04 in Runda Sector and presided over by the District Police Commander (DPC) Superintendent of Police (SP) Donath Kinani, former addicts spoke out about their life as drug abuses and how their lives changed after they quit drugs and integrated in the cooperative.
The former addicts narrated their life stories after SP Kinani gave a length lecture on effects of drugs and urged cyclists to take more concrete measures in fighting drug abuse. READ MORE
Motorcyclists in Nyabihu form anti-crime club
Taxi-moto operators in Nyabihu District organised under their cooperative - COTAMOKANYA - stepped in the footsteps of their colleagues in other parts of the country to form an anti-crime club as an effective means to put ideas together to fight and prevent crimes.
The club of commercial motorcyclists operating in Jenda Sector that will strengthen the community policing activities in Nyabihu was formed on February 4 in an event attended by police and local leaders in the district.
James Iyakaremye, who was elected the head of the anti-crime club said; “this club is a channel for us to exchange information about public safety and also ensure we collaborate with the police in fighting crimes in our neighborhoods.”
He added that; “if our clients aren’t secure we aren’t secure either and our business will be affected. To ensure that we keep making money, we need to fight all sorts of crime at all levels.” READ MORE
Anti-drug abuse campaign continues in schools
The Rwanda National Police (RNP) enhanced campaigns against trafficking, sell and use of illicit drugs was on February 4 conducted in Groupe Scolaire Ruyumba in Kamonyi District where over 350 students were urged to desist temptations from anyone that would lure them into drug related crimes.
In his address to the student, the District Community Liaison Officer, Inspector of Police (IP) Athanase Niyonagira told them to “never consume illegal substances” noting that it’s both a crime and a major factor to bad habits especially among the youth, the most abusers of drugs.
“Addict students always have a bad ending like dropping out of school and enrolling in other crimes like theft and fueling conflicts in their families and communities,” said IP Niyonagira. READ MORE
Former drug abuser narrate the ordeal
Emmanuel Dushimirimana, a resident of Nyankurazi of Kigarama Sector in Kirehe District, spent years doing and trafficking narcotic drugs. Recently, after years of nightmares and arrests, the 21-year old decided to quit and take a right direction.
On February 3, Dushimirimana narrated his ordeal to the people of Kirehe as he campaigned against sell and use of illicit drugs through his testimony.
“Dealing in drugs made me poor instead of making me rich. I would spend money trafficking them but at the end Police would seize them and that money is blown off just like that. In some other cases, I would just abandon it and runaway for fear of being arrested,” said Dushimirimana. READ MORE
Karongi: Police recovers stolen diesel
Police in Karongi District recovered 420 litres of diesel stolen from China Road and Bridge Corporation, a Chinese firm constructing the Rusizi-Karongi-Rubavu highway.
The fuel in 21 jerrycans was recovered on February 1 in a police operation conducted in early morning hours in the villages of Kagabiro and Ryaruhanga in Mubuga Sector.
Superintendent of Police (SP) Emmanuel Hitayezu, police spokesperson for the Western Province, said the jerrycans were found hidden in residents’ houses. READ MORE
Kamonyi youth enlightened on human trafficking
Youth in Kamonyi District were sensitized on the dangers of human trafficking as means to further put ideas together in community policing to combat the modern day slavery that affects mainly the young generation.
Inspector of Police (IP) Augustin Mbonyumugenzi, while sensitising about 500 catholic youth in Kamonyi on January 31, emphasised that although human trafficking is not a common phenomenon in Rwanda, a "single case is not acceptable."
He told them that the youth are the main target although a number of victims have been rescued and suspected traffickers arrested in collaboration with Rwandans and regional police institutions and organisations. READ MORE
