RNP joins blood donation campaign

About 600 police officers, on March 25, donated blood as Rwanda National Police (RNP) joined the national efforts to boost the National Centre for Blood Transfusion (NCBT).

The RNP leadership, commissioners, Junior and Non-Commissioned Officers, lined up at the RNP General Headquarters in Kacyiru to donated blood.

The voluntary exercise also coincided with the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding between RNP and Rwanda Biomedical Centre (RBC), represented by DIGP Marizamunda and the Director General of Rwanda Biomedical Center (RBC) Janine Condo, respectively and witnessed by the State Minister in the Ministry of Health in charge of Public Health and Primary Health Care, Dr. Patrick Ndimubanzi.

The MoU formalizes the existing partnership between the two institutions in aspects of health and security related health care. Read more

Rwanda to deploy sixth peacekeeping Police contingent

Rwanda National Police (RNP) is set to increase its participation in United Nations peacekeeping missions when they deploy the sixth Formed Police Unit (FPU) to serve under the UN Mission in South Sudan early next month.

According to Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) William Kayitare, the Commissioner for Peace Support Operations in RNP, equipment for the new contingent of 160 officers, have already arrived in Juba where they will be stationed.

The advance party left last Friday.

The new force joins another hybrid FPU contingent of 240, and 29 police advisors, currently serving under UNMISS. Read more

146 complete ‘international computer training’

The Minister of Youth and ICT, Jean Philbert Nsengimana, on March 24, presided over the closure of a nine-month internationally recognized computer training of 146 security personnel, at Rwanda National Police (RNP) Headquarters.

The course offered by International Computer Driving License (ICDL) included 69 police officers, 55 from Rwanda Defense Forces (RDF), nine from Rwanda Correctional Services (RCS), eight from Rwanda Management Institute (RMI) and six from the Ministry of Youth and ICT.

Minister Nsengimana said: “We live in a world where no innovation can be initiated without the use of technology. Starting this course with security organs is proof that our liberation struggle has shifted to development. In our quest to develop, we believe security organs should always be a step ahead.” Read more

City mayor roots for concerted efforts for sustainable security

The Mayor of the City of Kigali, Pascal Nyamurinda said that inclusiveness between security institutions, private security firms and the people builds a strong bond in the face of emerging threats to development.

Mayor Pascal Nyamurinda made the remarks last week while meeting managers of security companies, owners of commercial facilities, and heads of security in hotels, financial institutions and big buildings in Kigali.

The meeting held at the City Hall was also attended by the Commissioner for Counter-terrorism in Rwanda National Police (RNP), Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Denis Basabose and ACP Rogers Rutikanga, the Central Region Police Commander (RPC).

It aimed at streamlining and implementing security related strategies and plans in order to secure public places from any threats. It also discussed challenges and best practices between public and private security providers in order to curtail all security threats including international terrorism. Read more

Artistes boost campaign against illicit drugs

As Rwandans came together this Saturday in a monthly community work commonly known as Umuganda, musicians, comedians and gospel singers under their umbrella ‘Anti-crime Ambassadors’ joined residents of Nyarugenge District where they raised their voices to protect the young generation against illicit drugs.

The anti-drugs campaign followed Umuganda held in Nyarugenge Sector and brought together about 3000 residents, and members of Rwanda youth volunteers in community policing. Read more

Media practitioners, artistes hold campaign against illicit drugs

Media practitioners and artistes under their forum, ‘Arts and Media for Change’ stepped in to raise the voice against illicit drugs, one of the high impact crimes that continue to ravage the young generation in the country.

On Friday, all roads led to Kigali Stadium where over 5000 students from various schools in Nyarugenge District joined the call against the vice under the theme: ‘Together in raising awareness against trafficking, sale and consumption of illicit drugs.” Read more

Dirty Money: The bad economics of illicit drug trade

Recently, media reports have been awash with people being arrested over drug trafficking and seizure of scores of contrabands and narcotics.

Regionally, this is considered a serious challenge facing law enforcement agencies.

Back in Rwanda, cannabis and contrabands especially crude gin commonly known as Kanyanga, and other illicit gin packed in banned plastic bags such as Chief waragi, zebra waragi and African gin, among others, continues to be a threat to community safety and social welfare.

Gicumbi District has been labeled as one of the main transit routes for traffickers of kanyanga, which this article focuses on.

According to experts, such illicit gins interfere with legal economic activity in many different ways, as do other types of crime. The consequences stem largely from the direct and indirect influences of the large amounts of money in illegal trades. Read more

Joint taskforce to streamline operations of commercial motorcyclists

The recently constituted joint taskforce to oversee and streamline the operations of commercial motorcycle operators says it has made great strides to reorganize members and its cooperatives.

The unit was established in January this year to partner with other entities like Rwanda Utility Regulatory Authority (RURA), Rwanda Cooperative Agency (RCA), and the federation of motorcycle cooperatives to reorganize the motorcycle business, prevent fatal accidents largely caused by or involving motorcyclists, malpractices related to bribery, and ensures professionalism of the motorcycle security personnel.

There were also concerns of motorcyclists who were either direct or indirectly involved in crimes. Read more

Police breaks drug trafficking ring, 450kgs of cannabis seized

Police in the City of Kigali discovered a house in Kimisagara Sector of Nyarugenge District that was being used as a store for narcotic drugs.

The house located in Karwangabo Village, Kamuhoza Cell, where 13 sacks of cannabis weighing about 450kgs, were recovered, and three people arrested over the crime. Read more
