Ethiopian First Lady visit Isange One Stop Centre

The First Lady of Ethiopia, Roman Tesfaye visited Isange One Stop Centre situated at Kacyiru District Hospital, where she witnessed the role it plays in response to sexual and gender based violence, and facilitating the judicial system.

The First Lady, who was given an overview and a guided tour to various wings of the centre, described it as “comprehensive and humanity.”

“This One Stop Centre is comprehensive and humanity is best expressed. I am grateful for those, who contributed for its establishment and functioning as well, and justice deeds,” Mrs. Tesfaye said. Read more 

Imitavu of Kirehe: The tale of children changing mindset in community policing

When Rwanda National Police (RNP) was created in June 2000, the concept of community-oriented policing became one of the driving forces in response to crime ensure safety, security and promotion protection of human rights.

Community policing was adapted to encourage citizens to participate in crime-solving. It came as a strategic and thoughtful plan focused on the proactive prevention of crime and disorder, by partnering with the public to increase police visibility in all communities to solve, prevent and reduce crime.

However, the story of ‘Imitavu’ – loosely translated as calves – a group of about 100 children between the ages of six and fifteen, of Gahara Sector in Kirehe District, has brought a new sense in this ideal, and a new force in changing the mindset of the people in response to crime. Read more

RNP announce major activities to mark 17th anniversary

Preparations for the upcoming 17th anniversary of Rwanda National Police are in high gear as the force plans to kick off celebration activities earlier than usual.

In an Interview with the Commissioner for Community Policing, Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Celestin Twahirwa, he said that this year's countrywide activities will be directed toward crime prevention, human security and supporting the country’s development priorities.

It will be the seventh time RNP is holding the annual event, which are community oriented, since 2010.

"This year's activities that start on May 16 under the context of 'Police Week' will include countrywide human security and awareness campaigns. Precisely, we will distribute Solar Home Systems (SHS) to 3000 households in remote areas and 30 health centers in every district. Our distribution plans is to have 100 homes in every district connected across the country,” said ACP Twahirwa. Read more 

Youth volunteers commit to support Police Week

National and District coordinators of Rwanda Youth Volunteers in Community Policing (RYVCP) committed full support in the forthcoming Police Week activities.

RYVCP made the commitment, on Wednesday, during their meeting with the Inspector General of Police (IGP) Emmanuel K. Gasana held at RNP General Headquarters in Kacyiru.

This year’s Police Week will be marked under the theme; “17 years of vibrant partnership in policing: towards sustainable safety and security.”

The Police Chief hailed members of RYVCP for their partnership in ensuring public safety and further urged them to continue to play a significant role in the policing activities.

“Your effort in ensuring public safety is highly commendable; always use your networks to strengthen the community policing activities,” IGP Gasana said. Read more 

Kinyinya residents construct police station worth Rwf25 million

The Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIGP) in charge of Administration and Personnel, Juvenal Marizamunda, inaugurated a police station in Kinyinya Sector of Gasabo District.

The inauguration event was also attended by the Mayor of Gasabo, Stephen Rwamurangwa.

The fully-fledged police station is worth over Rwf25 million, which was fully contributed by the residents. It was constructed in a space of two months. 

DIGP Marizamunda said: “This is a proof of people with a vision and a result of good partnership. It’s clear that you understand well the concept of finding our own solutions to our problems.” Read more

Rwandan Police peacekeepers in Haiti decorated

United Nations decorated eighteen Rwanda National Police (RNP) officers serving in Haiti with service medals for their outstanding peacekeeping role in the Caribbean nation.

The Deputy Special Representative of the Secretary-General (DSRSG) in Haiti, Moustafa Benlamlin, who presided over the medal parade, expressed gratitude for the professionalism and discipline exhibited by the decorated officers.

“You served with dignity, dedication and hard work and it is a pride to the UN,” Benlamlin said. Read more 

Police bust racket in murder of Iribagiza, gatekeeper

Rwanda National Police (RNP) busted a racket in the recent murder of the businesswoman Christine Iribagiza in Kicukiro and a gatekeeper in Gacuriro of Gasabo District, arresting four prime suspects including a woman. 

The suspects, who were paraded during a press briefing, were identified as Bertin Majyambere, 48, Hassan Sumayire Hatungineza alias Fils and his wife Grace Dushimimana, and a motorcyclist called Benjamin Ingabire. Read more

Western Province: RPC calls for Community policing ownership

The Regional Police Commander for the Western Province, Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Emmanuel Karasi called upon residents of Rubavu District to enhance their partnership in crime prevention and ensuring safety.

This was during a community meeting held in Gisenyi Sector and also attended by the Mayor of Rubavu, Jeremie Sinamenye along with representatives of other security organs, and local leaders.

ACP Karasi told hundreds of residents that crime detection and prevention is not only the responsibility of uniformed officers but also a duty of every Rwandan.

He outlined drug trafficking, smuggling, theft as some of the common crimes in the district they should give emphasis to fight in collaboration with police and local leaders. Read more 

Nyagatare in mass campaign against illicit drugs

Concerted efforts against trafficking, sell and use of illicit drugs in Nyagatare District continue to reap big as at least contrabands valued at over Rwf43 million have been seized over the last one year.

The contrabands that include over 209760 pieces of various brands, 1748 cartons of kitoko, and 612 litres of kanyanga, were destroyed in Rwimiyaga Sector.

The mayor George Mupenzi urged the residents to stay at the forefront in the fight against drugs, and sustenance of social protection programmes.

The DPC, Chief Supt. Sesonga, said that this is part of the anti-illicit drugs campaign that will continue in all the twelve sectors of Nyagatare, where stored seized psychotropic substances will also be destroyed. Read more 

Ruhango: Police reunites 20 families wrecked with wrangles

Police in Ruhango District reconciled and reunited 20 families that had been marred with domestic disputes. The families that were reconciled were known in their neighborhood as violent couples.

The conflict-ridden couples and families were tutored on the dangers and risks of domestic misunderstanding. Read more

Police FC storm Peace Cup quarters

Police Football Club booked their place in the last eight of the 2017 Peace Cup after eliminating second division-based United Stars of Muhanga 6-1 on aggregate.

The first leg a fortnight ago ended 1-0 in favour of Police. However, the return leg became a one-team show as the law enforcers winning 5-1 in a game played at Kicukiro stadium.

Striker Danny Usengimana bagged a hat-trick with both Mohamed Mpozembizi and Hegman Ngomirakiza completing the scoreline. Read more
