Police commends ‘public ownership’ for improved safety and security

On Wednesday October 3, Rwanda Governance Board (RGB) released the 5th edition of the ‘Rwanda Governance Scorecard (RGS)’ report ranking safety and security as the best performing pillar in governance scoring 94.97 percent. It was also ranked the most improved pillar with 4 percent.

The 2018 RGS also highlights that all the four indicators of safety and security are among the top seven best performing indicators with the score of over 90 percent.

The indicators include maintaining security with 95.24 percent; national security with 98.80 percent; personal and property safety with 91.87 percent and reconciliation, social cohesion and unity 93.95 percent.

The report states in part that “the pillar on Safety and Security continues to lead in performance since the creation of RGS in 2010. Given the country’s history, security remains of a paramount factor in Rwanda's sustainable transformation.” Read More

How Nyagatare is battling the drugs menace

It’s about 9:30 am as we arrive at Nyagatare District Police Unit (DPU) as we set out to document the community efforts against drug trafficking and consumption in one of the mapped trafficking routes.

At a distance we see a rather busy police officer speaking with gestures of command at junior staff, “bring them here” he says in reference to law breakers arrested the previous evening.

Senior Supt. Pierre Tebuka, the District Police Commander (DPC) is seeking more information about the previous night’s raid on narcotic drugs traffickers and smugglers.

As we exchange pleasantries, he tackles on the issue of “time” as an important factor. This was in reference to our late arrival for the scheduled interview.

“I have just received information that drug traffickers will be crossing into Rwanda through Tabagwe Sector from neighboring Uganda, if you are ready come with me to the field; you will get all the answers to all your questions,” the DPC says in response to our question on the state of substances in Nyagatare. Police to conduct operations against old school buses

The Rwanda National Police (RNP) department of Traffic and Road Safety has called upon owners and managers of transport agencies to take the lead role in ensuring that their vehicles remain in roadworthy status.

The spokesperson for the traffic department, Senior Supt. Jean Marie Vianney Ndushabandi observed that sometimes owners and managers are reluctant to follow up on the status of their automobiles.

“Some owners and managers are consumed by how much they make not the threat they pose to themselves, passengers and road users in general,” SSP Ndushabandi said. Read more

Gakenke: Police support disadvantaged families

Police in Gakenke District, over the weekend reached out to 28 vulnerable families with fully paid health insurance premiums (Mutuelle de Sante). The gesture which was part of the monthly communal work—Umuganda—conducted last Saturday is part of the Rwanda National Police (RNP) human security initiatives.

During Umuganda, Police which was also joined by members of Rwanda Youth Volunteers in Community Policing (RYVCP) in Gakenke as well as residents, and laid bricks that will be used to construct a house in Rugeshi Village of Ruhinga Cell in Kivuruga Sector, which will be used as an Early Childhood Development (ECD) centre. Rwamagana: Police sensitise students on fighting illicit drugs

Police in the Eastern Province have urged youth there to heighten their anti-drugs activities in order to minimize occurrence of crime in the area.

Police say illicit drug consumption and excessive alcohol consumption have been identified as the main source of majority crimes in communities.

This was part of the message delivered in Rwamagana District on October 5, by the Regional Police Cmmander-Eastern Province, Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Benoit Kayijuka while addressing students of Agahozo Sharon Secondary School.

The message was delivered after a friendly football match between the Eastern region Police team and Agahozo Sharon Secondary School.

Kicukiro: Two held over theft

Police in Kicukiro District have arrested two men in connection with breaking into houses and stealing assorted electronics and other items.

Police spokesperson for the City of Kigali, Chief Inspector of Police (CIP) Emmanuel Kayigi identified the suspects as Fredrick Nizeyimana and Martin Harorimana, both 29 years.

They were taken into custody on October 2, in Amahoro Village, Karembure Cell in Gahanga Sector, CIP Kayigi said.

"They were found with a stolen motorcycle which we suspect it was stolen; it didn't have plate numbers neither did they have its identification documents," he said. Read more
