Gerayo Amahoro: Bus-drivers warned against drunk-driving

 
Impaired driving commonly known as drunk-driving is one of the major causes of road accidents involving buses, which will not be tolerated, Police said.

This is one of the messages delivered to bus drivers on Monday during the ongoing road safety campaign dubbed Gerayo Amahoro, which will run for 52 weeks. The month of June focuses on “Don’t Drink and Drive.”

While addressing bus drivers in Remera taxi-park, Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Jean Marie Vianney Ndushabandi, the spokesperson for the Traffic and Road Safety department, said that driving while intoxicated is one of the human behaviors that continue to cause loss of lives.

“One drunk-driver is a danger to all passengers on board and any road user. You have to protect not only your own lives but also those of your passengers whose lives are pressed in your hands,” SSP Ndushabandi said.

“We’re not telling you not to drink but we are reminding you to drink responsibly in your off days, if you drink to go on the wheel,” he emphasized. Read more

National Police College hold symposium on Peace, Security and Justice


The National Police College (NPC), on Thursday, held a symposium on Peace, Security and Justice as part of its Police Senior Command and Staff Course (PSCSC) programme.


This year's symposium was held under the theme; "Enhancing Security in Africa: Regional Security in Perspective."

Thirty Police students from nine African countries constitute the 7th intake of the PSCSC.
 
The countries are Central African Republic (CAR), Nigeria, Liberia, Somalia, Sudan, South Sudan, Kenya, Namibia, and the host Rwanda. Read more

RNP, owners of hospitality facilities partner to fight drunk-driving


Rwanda National Police (RNP), on Friday, held a meeting with owners and managers of hospitality facilities in the country and discussed joint measures to prevent the deadly behaviours of drunk-driving.

The meetings held separately in all regions of the country, were in line with the 52 weeks of the national sustainable road safety campaign.

It brought together owners and managers of hotels, motels, restaurants, guest houses, bars and night clubs. It comes at the time when RNP and partners in road safety are dedicating efforts in this month of June on raising awareness on impaired driving.

While addressing owners and managers of hospitality facilities in Kigali, Senior Supt. Jean Marie Vianney Ndushabandi, the spokesperson for the Traffic and Road Safety department, reminded them of their duty in the safety of their clients.

“A drunken person is no longer your customer that day, but he will be your customer the following day when he or she is alive and well. If one is drunk, reach out and advise him or her to take a taxis or motorcycle,” SSP Ndushabandi said. Read More

Kigali: Students form Road Safety Club

 
Students of Kigali Leading School located in Gitega Sector, Nyarugenge District formed a Road Safety Club on Friday to support the ongoing national campaign against road carnage.

The club with 300 members was created after Police and members of Rwanda Youth Volunteers in Community Policing sensitized the students and teachers to equally take a central role in changing bad behaviors on road usage, which often result into accidents and loss of lives.

Chief Inspector of Police (CIP) Marie Gorette Umutesi, the central region Police spokesperson, thanked the students for the spirit of volunteerism.

She said that such initiatives supplement efforts in behavioural change and fighting lawlessness. Read more

Over 400 complete DASSO refresher course

At least 429 members of the District Administrative Security Support Organ (DASSO), on Friday, completed a three-week refresher security management training at the Police Training School (PTS) Gishari in Rwamagana District.

The administrative security personnel, who include 37 females, were drawn from all the 30 districts.

They were trained in weapon handling, discipline, leadership and management, first aid, laws and community policing, among others.

Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Uwimana Safari, while presiding over the pass-out, urged them to continue maintaining security in their localities and support local authorities. Read more
