Rwanda, Tanzania Police forces meet on cross-border security

Rwanda National Police (RNP) and Tanzania Police Forces held a bilateral meeting at Rusumo border post on Saturday and discussed various policing issues pertaining cross-border security.

The meeting was co-chaired by the Inspector General of Police (IGP) Emmanuel K. Gasana and his Tanzanian counterpart, Ernest J. Mangu.

Ultimately, they appointed a joint team composed of Criminal Investigations Department (CID) and traffic to conduct and assess the securing along the central corridor which connects Rwanda to the port of Dar es Salaam port through Rusumo border post. READ MORE

Revenue Protection Unit seize 600 boxes of smuggled liquor

Revenue Protection Unit (RPU) and Rwanda Revenue Authority (RRA), last Tuesday,  seized over 600 boxes of varied brands of wines and spirits that had been fraudulently taken out of the Customs stores.

The goods in at least eleven different brands belonging to Godfrey Nkusi, a local businessman were seized in the City of Kigali.

The assorted alcoholic drinks include Black and Red labels, Martin, Sheridan’s, Moet & Chandon, and Mouton Cadet.

Others include KWV (Merlot), Courvoisie, Cinzano, B&G, Smirnoff and Dragon’s Back.

According to Raphael Tugirumuremyi, commissioner for Customs, the smuggler had evaded taxes worth Rwf70 million. READ MORE

Kicukiro: Eight schools join crime prevention efforts

Last Friday, eight schools in Kicukiro District formed anti-crime clubs as part of efforts to join Rwanda National Police to raise awareness to combat crimes.

The schools are APEKA, Star School, SICO, CJFK, GS Remera Protestant, APAPE, GS Gatenga and King David Academy. READ MORE

Motorcyclist arrested with five sacks of cannabis in Ngoma

As part of the ongoing operations to break the chain of drug traffickers, police in Ngoma District, last Thursday arrested a man identified as Jean Bosco Uwitonze, who was at the time trafficking five sacks of cannabis.

Uwitonze alias Kigingi, was arrested in Kazo Sector afrte he reported by the community Irondo patrol after noticing “unusual movement” of the motorcycle.

Also arrested was one Diogene Ishimwe, 22, in Mutenderi Sector, as he was trafficking 8kgs of cannabis. READ MORE

RNP in mass anti-crime awareness in schools

With the youth being among the majority influenced to indulge in varied unlawful acts, Rwanda National Police (RNP) has strengthened its anti-crime awareness campaign in schools enlighten the young generation on preventive measures and introduce them to the concept of community policing.

On Wednesday, simultaneous campaigns were conducted in various schools across the country, and emphasized on fighting drug abuse, child abuse, gender based violence, and human trafficking.

Others include preventing unwanted pregnancies, HIV infections, and awareness on universal education. READ MORE

Kinyinya residents commence construction of Police station

It is a tradition in Rwanda that every last Saturday of the month, Rwandans at all levels join hands together in community development activities, commonly known as Umuganda.

For Kinyinya residents in Gasabo District, they spent the February Umuganda exercise clearing the ground and laying the foundation for the construction of their police station in Bukinanyana Village of Nyagatovu Cell.

Close to 2000 residents took part in the construction activities and recommitted to see it completed and operational before the end of the year. READ MORE

Police arrest 30 suspected of attempting to bribe officers

In the week under review, we reported the arrest of 30 people for allegedly attempting to bribe police officers.

The suspects included drivers, aspiring drivers who tried to bribe supervising officers after failing driving tests, smugglers and those who were trying to influence the release of their relatives or friends.

RNP spokesperson, Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Theos Badege, said the force has set the bar high in dealing with corruption and bribery in particular considering its “high impact.” READ MORE

Kicukiro: 41 anti-crime clubs in schools acquire tips on community policing

About 328 students, who are among the members of the 41 anti-crime clubs in various schools in Kicukiro District converged at Integrated Polytechnic Regional Centre (IPRC-Kigali) in a one day training that was aimed at improving their understanding on community policing and crime prevention and reduction in particular.

Each of the 41 clubs was represented by at least eight students.

During the meeting organized by the District Police Unit (DPU) of Kicukiro, students discussed the role of community policing committees, and the impact of their clubs in improving and maintain security. READ MORE
