UN Police peacekeeping course ends at Police Training School

A two-week United Nations Police peacekeeping course ended on December 4 at the Police Training School (PTS) Gishari in Rwamagana District with a call for the officers to aim for perfection and peace building in conflict-ridden nations.

While presiding over the official closing of the international peacekeeping course, the Rwanda National Police Deputy Inspector General in charge of Administration and Personnel, Juvenal Marizamunda thanked participants for their “dedication and enthusiasm to learn” which he said will help in shaping peacekeeping operations.

“What you learnt here is for your own benefit, the benefit of your respective institutions and people in missions where you will be deployed, so endeavor to put to use what you have learnt as we strive to make the world safer for all,” DIGP Marizamunda said. Read More…

Minister Harerimana commends media’s contribution in crime prevention

The Minister for Internal Security, Sheikh Musa Fazil Harerimana yesterday hailed the media for playing a crucial part in crime prevention and took stock of the media-police partnership saying that the two entities play a crucial role in sensitizing Rwandans and building a secure nation.

Minister Harerimana made the remarks as he concluded a one day police-media conference that brought together  heads and representatives of local media houses, and journalists in an interactive session with the Rwanda National Police leadership, held at the force’s Headquarters in Kacyiru.

During the conference, Commissioners presented crime status in the country in the last three months, traffic and road safety situation, and strategies to counter them. Read More….

Police and Media play complementary roles - Media experts

The duties of police and those of the media aim at building safer and developing societies for sustainable nationhood, media experts said yesterday.

The experts were speaking during the Rwanda National Police and Media interaction session  which was held at force's headquarters in Kacyiru under the theme "The role of Media in Security and Crime Prevention."

Rwanda National Police recovers Sh11 million stolen from Uganda

The Rwanda National Police has handed over 11 million Ugandan shillings (approximately Rwf4 million) to a Rwandan businessman in Uganda after it was recovered from  the suspected thief, who had crossed into Rwanda.

The money was handed over to Milindi Kamili on December 3, by Chief Supt. Peter Karake, the Deputy Commissioner for Interpol and International at the RNP headquarters in Kacyiru.

The money was recovered on November 30 from the suspect identified as Fideli Mateso, also a Rwandan national, after Police officers in Gatsibo District stopped the bus he was traveling in, following information provided by both the victim and Uganda Police Force. Read More…

Installing speed governors: Public transporters upbeat on deadline

With 15 days left to the deadline of having all public transport vehicles running on speed governors, the Rwanda Association of Passenger Transporters (ATPR) says the gadgets will be installed within the agreed timeframe.

In an interview with ATPR’s president, Olivier Nizeyimana, he said that public transport companies have started fixing the device and that the “process won’t take long for all the 1500 vehicles under ATPR to be running on speed governors.” Read More….

Nyamasheke: 2400 CPCs meet over security

Over 2400 members of Community Policing Committees (CPCs) in Nyamasheke District met on November 30 to discuss and strategize their policing roles in their respective communities.

The one-day meeting was conducted separately where the CPCs met in their respective sectors (15 sectors that make up Nyamasheke) to review security related issues.

According to the District Community Liaison Officer (DCLO) of Nyamasheke, Inspector of Police (IP) Deo Mutabaruka, the meeting was organized so that they get a common understanding on issues of security and subsequent response to any challenges. Read More….

Fighting corruption: Man arrested for attempting to bribe Police officer

It was an impossible attempt for Aloys Mbonigaba of Gatsibo district, on November 27, when he attempted to bribe a police officer with Rwf100, 000 to release a suspect, but instead ended up joining him.

According to Inspector of Police (IP) Emmanuel Kayigi, Police spokesperson for the Eastern region, it all started when Police in Gatsibo arrested one Felicien Mudende after he was caught red-handed trafficking and selling illicit drugs.  Mudende is Mbonigaba’s Godfather. Read More….

Ngoma: Students challenge youth on fighting drug abuse

Students in Ngoma District have called for concerted efforts to reinforce the ongoing campaign against use and sell of illicit drugs, an act rated high among the youth including school-going children.

The call was made on November 30 during a meeting held at the Integrated Polytechnic Regional Center (IPRC-East), and brought together over 100 students selected from primary, secondary and higher institutions of learning in Ngoma. Read More….

Police Handball Club start training ahead of regional tourney

The National Handball League champions, Police have joined the camp early ahead of the East and Central African Handball tournament which starts on December 6 in Kigali.

The regional tournament which was last organized in 2004, also hosted by Rwanda, brings together big clubs from Kenya, Tanzania, Burundi, Uganda and the hosts, Rwanda. Rwanda will be represented by Police and APR. Read More….‎ 

Firefighting techniques extended medical workers in Karongi

Over sixty medical practitioners from Kirinda hospital in Karongi district have been enlightened on the causes of fire outbreaks and equipped with firefighting skills.

In an event held at the hospital premises, on December 2, the District Police Commander, Chief Inspector of Police (CIP) Bérnard Gahima, urged the medical workers and other hospital staff to always take precaution to prevent fires, and intervene in time when it breaks out, to prevent escalation and extending to other parts of the buildings.

The hospital staff and doctors were also trained on how to use fire extinguisher, sand and other gadgets to put out fire.

“In most cases, fire outbreak in buildings are caused by short circuit resulting from old or substandard installations and overloaded gadgets, so always check such installations and switch off all electronics, whenever you are away, not only here at the hospital but even in your respective homes,” said CIP Gahima. Three arrested over tax evasion

Police is holding three people, who include two Indian businessmen for allegedly evading taxes amounting to Rwf70 million through manipulating Electronic Billing Machine (EBM) invoices.

According to officials from Rwanda Revenue Authority (RRA), the suspects were apprehended by the police following a tip off by a businessman whose EBM was illegally used in some dubious operations by his accountant, who is also among those arrested.

“The accountant, Abudallah Kalisa, approached two Indian businessmen and sold them invoices of items that were not sold; the two men bought the invoices to register a higher input VAT so that they could declare less output VAT,” said , Robert Mugabe, the RRA Deputy Commissioner for Revenue Investigations and Enforcement Department. Police impound car loaded with drugs

Police in Ngoma District on Thursday impounded a vehicle that was intercepted carrying 150kilogrammes of cannabis packed in sacks and stuffed in the boot of a Toyota Corolla RAB 029 R.

According to Eastern Province Police Spokesperson, Inspector of Police Emmanuel Kayigi, said police seized the drugs in Mutenderi sector around 02:00am at dawn.

“After receiving a tip off about the vehicle carrying drugs, we deployed along the road and when the vehicle approached a police checkpoint, the suspects stopped got out and ran,” said Kayigi. Read More…
