UN course on peacekeeping starts in Gishari
The second United Nations Police Officers Course (UNPOC) started on Monday at the Peacekeeping Training Centre in Gishari, Rwamagana District where 45 participants from seven African countries will get a clear and same understanding on peace building activities and improve their operational capabilities.
Participants in the two-week course are from Rwanda, Uganda, Kenya, Comoros, Sudan, Somali and Ethiopia.
While officially opening the course, the Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIGP) in charge of Administration and Personnel, Juvenal Marizamunda, said: "The changing nature of conflicts and challenges faced by peacekeepers in discharging their duties requires adequate skills, knowledge and attitudes in mission area.,” Read more

The Under-Secretary General United Nations and UN Women Executive Director, Dr. Phumzile Mlambo Ngcuka, on Wednesday, visited Isange One Stop Centre located at Kacyiru District Hospital, where she witnessed its impact in fighting.

UN decorates Rwandan Police peacekeepers in Darfur
Eighteen Rwandan police peacekeepers serving under the African Union-United Nations Hybrid Mission in Darfur (UNAMID) were last Tuesday decorated with medal of service excellence.
The medal parade presided over by the Joint Special Representative (JSR) to UNAMID, Kingsley Mamabolo was held in the mission headquarters.
The decorated currently in their final phase of their one year peacekeeping mandate, serve as Individual Police officer (IPOs), whose duty include mentorship and advisors.
The medal awarding ceremony was also attended by UNAMID Force Commander, Lt. Gen Frank Mushyo Kamanzi; Frank Samuel Koffwie, who represented the Police Commissioner, Mission Chief of Staff, Karen Tchalian and Dr. Mohammed Tarawana UNAMID Police Chief of Staff. Read more
Uganda deports murder fugitive
Rwanda National Police (RNP) received a fugitive at Gatuna border post, who had escaped prison and fled to Uganda.
Jovan Rugamba was sentenced to 20 years in prison for murder in 2011, but escaped prison in February this year.
He was arrested by Uganda Police Force (UPF) late last month in Kawempe division in Uganda’s capital Kampala following an arrest warrant issued by Interpol-Kigali.
RNP spokesperson, Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Theos Badege said that after the convict escaped prison, a red notice was issued through Interpol’s international communication system – 1-24/7. Read more
Police Senior Command students pay homage to Genocide victims
Twenty-five police students from the region currently attending the ‘Police Senior Command and Staff Course’ at the National Police College (NPC) in Musanze District, visited Kigali Genocide Memorial to pay tribute to more than one million innocent lives killed during the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi.
According to Commissioner of Police (CP) Felix Namuhoranye, the Commandant of NPC, the visit was also to learn more about the 1994 Genocide against Tutsis, which is part of their conflict resolutions and peace studies at the College.” Read more
The tale of a crime-free village in Gatsibo
Rwanda National Police (RNP) has hailed efforts by Gatsibo District resident in combating lawlessness through collectiveness and using community policing methods in keeping their communities secure.
Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Theos Badege the RNP spokesperson made the remarks recently while addressing residents of Nyagihanga Sector where he represented the police leadership, shortly after a joint community work between Police and residents held in the framework of the forthcoming 2017 Police Week.
The exercise was meant to enlighten the residents on activities to be conducted during Police Week.
Nyagihanga is one of the beneficiaries of the Police Week social programmes where at least 120 households will be lit with home solar energy in the ongoing installation programme.
About 3000 households and 30 health centres will get solar energy, countrywide.
ACP Badege, while speaking to the residents, commended them for their team work and partnership in combating crime.
The spokesperson was referring to Kagarama Village in Gitoki Sector, which has not recorded any crime since the beginning of the year.
“This is mature community policing. Where there’s no Kanyanga and other psychotropic drinks, and cannabis, ideally, there will be no fighting. This is a clear model that defines responsible citizens, who understood their role and ownership to prevent crime,” said ACP Badege. Read more
Four bar owners arrested over selling alcohol to minors
A police operation conducted Friday night in Gasabo District arrested four bar owners for allegedly serving alcoholic drinks to minors.
At least eleven minors, majority girls were found taking alcoholic beverages in fours bars whose owners have been arrested.
The Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Local Government, Odetta Uwamariya, while speaking to journalists at Kigali Metropolitan, yesterday, where the suspects were paraded, said that serving alcoholic drinks to minors had raised concern.
“This Rwanda National Police operation, therefore, came as a reaction to a security meeting held on May 9 that raised concerns of minors in bars. It is illegal to give alcoholics to minors, and it’s an act we will jointly fight,” the Permanent Secretary said.
“If your child is not at home, he or she should be at school or somewhere in a legal place but not in bars or night clubs,” she added. Read more
