[PHOTOS]: Rwanda's approach against gender violence unshakable, Senate President
The President of the Senate, Bernard Makuza said that Rwanda's stand in responding to violence that women, girls and children face is “unshakable” and that “no one has a tight to violate rights of others.”
The senate President made the remarks on November 24, while officially launching this year's 16 Days of Activism against Gender Violence, held at Amahoro stadium.
“There is unshakable political will and ability to tackle violence that women, girls and children continue to face. Gender based violence and child abuse is a threat to life, family and the entire community, which affects the national development agenda. You can't talk of development when rights of some people continue to be violated,” he said.
This year's campaign is held under the theme: “End Violence against Women and Girls: Speak Out.” Read more
[PHOTOS]: Police hold all-out road safety campaign
The Rwanda National Police (RNP) road safety campaign launched a fortnight ago continued last week when the Police leadership, commissioners and senior officers took to streets and highways to teach all road users on how safe to use the road as means to avert road carnage.
The move is aimed at reaching out to all road users to learn and respect road safety rules and regulations so as to curb road accidents in the country under the theme: “Know and Respect Traffic Rules to Save Lives.”
Inspector General of Police (IGP) Emmanuel K. Gasana, who was on the Eastern axis, went from vehicle to vehicle giving road safety tips to drivers and passengers, and urged each to play an individual role to ensure that road safety standards are observed.
Along the Northern axis, the Deputy IGP in charge of Administration and Personnel, echoed the same message and tutored passengers on their role in preventing road accidents.
Meanwhile, commissioners and senior officers from the general headquarters reinforced territorial units in regions and districts in the same exercise. Read more
DIGP Munyuza urge motorcyclists to take safety first while on roads
The Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIP) in charge of Operations, Dan Munyuza appealed to motorcyclists to value their lives, prioritise their safety and desist from deadly behaviors on roads that continue to cost people of their lives.
The Deputy Police Chief made the call at Amahoro stadium, where he addressed thousands of motorcyclists operating in the City of Kigali.
Between January and October this year, a total of 1765 motorcyclists were involved in road accidents, and they account for 18.5 percent of fatalities recorded in the last three months alone.
He urged them to “think and act appropriately” and do away with reckless and deadly riding behaviors while respecting traffic guidelines.
“You are in this transport business because you want to live and make your lives better; it supports the country’s economic growth. So, regulate your speed, respect safety signposts; don’t ride when you are tired or drunk because that would be a death wish that will also kill others,” he said, urging them to always wear helmets to protect them and their passengers in case of accident. Road safety, fighting GBV take centre stage in after-Umuganda discussions
The fight against GBV and preventing road traffic accidents took centre stage in community discussions shortly after the monthly communal exercise – Umuganda – conducted this Saturday in all the 2148 cells across the country.
The discussions aimed at raising awareness to fight violence that women and girls face, and to teach people how safe to use roads.
While speaking to about 5000 people in Kamonyi District, where Police also joined the residents in Umuganda in Nyarubaka Sector, the Minister of Finance Amb Claver Gatete reminded them to take control of their lives while using the road by paying maximum vigilance. Read more
Police honours pledge to Kamonyi orchestra
Rwanda National Police (RNP), on Saturday, handed over clothes and shoes to Iryamukuru a musical band in Kamonyi District, for their outstanding contribution to ensuring safety and security.
The band uniform worth over Rwf400, 000 was handed over by Commissioner of Police (CP) Emmanuel Butera, commissioner for perations and Public Order, on behalf of Rwanda National Police.
This was shortly after Umuganda in which about 5000 Kamonyi residents participated
The band uniform was pledged during the Police Week in June as a gesture of appreciation for their community policing partnership with the police to raise awareness against crime through their music. Read more
Residents foil theft of motorcycle, hands over suspect to Police
On November 20 at about 4 am, Ezechiel Munyaneza, a commercial motorcyclist in City of Kigali transported a passenger to Gitega Sector in Nyarugenge District; little did he know that the passenger was a thief luring him into the trap to steal his motorcycle.
On arrival at the destination in Gitega, the passenger identified as Jean Claude Bizimana, 28, got off the motorcycle and started assaulting Munyaneza demanding to surrender his motorcycle.
In the process of fighting back and making an alarm for help, residents in the neighbourhood got out of their beds and saved Munyaneza, who was at the time bleeding, and apprehended Bizimana before he could flee with the motorcycle.
Residents called the Police, which took up the case and took Bizimana into custody on charges of “theft with violence.” Read more
[PHOTOS]: Senatorial commission on governance assess impact of Isange
A senatorial standing committee on political and good governance visited Isange One Stop Centre at Kacyiru hospital to assess its impact in responding to incidences of gender based violence and child abuse.
Headed by its chairman, Dr. Jean Nepomuscene Sindikubwabo alongside his deputy Gertrude Kazarwa, the commission was received and briefed by Commissioner of Police (CP) Daniel Nyamwasa, the Director of Kigali Forensic Laboratory.
In an interview, Dr. Sindikubwabo hailed the impact of Isange and the role of RNP is raising awareness on preventing gender based violence and child abuse.
“When you analyze its responsibilities, you will find that the specific duty of the police is to receive and support victims of GBV and child abuse. These efforts need to be supported by everyone and all institutions because,” Dr. Sindikubwabo said. Read more
[PHOTOS]: Eastern Province: Governor Mufurukye roots for concerted efforts against narcotic drugs
The Governor of the Eastern Province Fred Mufurukye called upon residents to partner with security organs to fight trafficking, sell and use of psychotropic substances.
The Governor was speaking in Ngoma District where he addressing a community gathering in Kazo Sector.
This was after the exercise to dispose of about 680 kilogrammes of cannabis and over 3200 litres of illicit brew.
The destruction exercise came a day after other 34000 litres of illicit brew were also disposed of in Kazo.
The poured illicit drinks were seized from one resident in Kazo, who was operating an illegal distillery. The illegal plant was discovered during the ongoing Rwanda National Police (RNP) and Rwanda Standards Bureau (RBS) joint operations against illegal or substandard distilleries. Read more
Police, residents plant 12000 trees in Ngororero
The Rwanda National Police (RNP) and the Ministry of Lands and Forestry afforestation exercise continued to gain momentum after other 12000 were planted in Ngororero District.
Thousands of residents joined the police to plant the seedlings on a four-hectare land in Muhanda of Nganza Cell.
The partnership seeks to plant at 27, 000 hectares of trees across the country, with 22000 on agroforestry land and 5000 on hilly areas, in the next five years.
The vice mayor of Ngororero in charge of Social Affairs, while addressing the residents shortly after the planting exercise, hailed the existing collaboration between masses and police in human security and socio-economic development activities, including environmental protection. Read more
Kayonza: Police, residents construct houses, toilets for disadvantaged
The District Police Unit of Kayonza, members of Rwanda Youth Volunteers in Community Policing, local leaders and residents, joined efforts to renovate houses and construct toilets for the disadvantaged families.
At least 51 houses have been renovated and 46 toilets constructed in a communal human security exercise that started more than a week ago.
The District Police Commander of Kayonza, Chief Inspector Octave Mutembe said that “this is a continuous exercise in partnership with local entities and the people to implement government policies to promote good health and overall wellbeing.” Read more
