[PHOTOS]: RNP complete CAR, South Sudan rotation

THE deployment of the Protection and Support Unit (PSU) contingent of 140 officers to Central African Republic (CAR) on Saturday marked the end of the deployment rotational exercise that started early in the week.

The last deployed contingent under the command of Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Emmanuel Hatari replaced the same number that returned home later in the afternoon under the command of ACP Barthelemy Rugwizangoga, which also returned home later that day.

A total of 660 officers were deployed to replace the same number under the United Nations Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in the Central African Republic (MINUSCA) and the UN Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS). Read more

At least 258 game rangers, last Friday, completed a one-and-half month refresher course at Police Training School (PTS) Gishari in Rwamagana District.

The course conducted by Rwanda National Police (RNP) falls in the existing agreement with Rwanda Development Board signed in February 2010. It was organized to improve their overall professionalism in ensuring security of game parks and tourists.

The training covered topics such as drills and duties, skills at arms, self defense, voice procedures, Rwandan values, patriotism, first aid and physical fitness, among others.Read more.

Road safety campaign: Cyclists reminded on importance of reflector jackets

The Rwanda National Police (RNP) road safety campaign continued last Friday in Gasabo District where cyclists were reminded always wear reflector jackets to be visible on the road especially at night, to prevent being hit by vehicles.

While speaking to hundreds of commercial cyclists operating in Kigali, who gathered in Nyandungu, Gasabo District, Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Rafiki Mujiji, the Deputy Commissioner for the Traffic and Road Safety department, said that although RNP continues to put measures to mitigate fatal accidents, individual responsibility on safer use of roads.

He emphasized that RNP will stay committed to ensuring safety on roads, and advised them to organize themselves into cooperatives to benefits from free training on traffic rules and regulations and proper road usage in particular. Read more

Nyagatare: Residents join anti-gender violence campaign

Residents of Nyagatare District, on November 29, joined the rest of the country in a campaign to further drive out gender based violence in their community.

The campaign, which is in the framework of the ongoing 16 Days of Activism against gender violence was held in Nyarurema Cell of Gatunda Sector, where various speakers called upon men to break the patriarchal habits that still exit and challenge the gender balance norms.

While addressing the residents, the Vice mayor of Nyagatare in charge of Social Affairs, Domithilla Musabyemariya challenged women and girls of Gatunda to stand up against such violations and report any case of GBV they encounter or witness to ensure that culprits face justice. Read more

Two stolen motorcycles recovered, suspects arrested

Police are holding, since November 26, three men on suspicion of stealing two motorcycles in Gicumbi and Kicukiro districts.

Haruna Sindayigaya, a resident of Gicumbi was caught re-handed with a motorcycle registration number RC 779Z, which was reportedly stolen recently.

Two other suspects; Jean Bosco Rafiki and Jean Claude Ntirenganya were apprehended in Kicukiro while trying to sell a motorcycle registration number TVS 942, belonging to one Mboneye Niyonshuti, which was also stolen recently. Read more

Gakenke: Miners told to prioritize safety

Mining companies operating in Gakenke District were reminded to prioritise safety of their employees and security of their concessions to prevent disasters and loss of lives that arise out of recklessness and illegal mining activities.

The call was made on November 27 during a meeting that brought together miners, Police and local authorities in Gakenke.

The meeting focused mainly on safety and security procedures in mining concessions in order to prevent unnecessary accidents that usually occur due to poor safety procedures.

The vice mayor of Gakenke in charge economic development, Aime François Niyonsenga, urged owners of concessions to ensure that worker performs their work in “favourable conditions, which are free from occupational accidents and diseases because only a safe and healthy worker can be more productive.” Read more.

Rwamagana: Leaders root for strengthened collaboration in security

Security organs, local leaders and members of Rwanda Youth Volunteers in Community Policing (YVCP) in Rwamagana District met on November 27 to assess the security status in the district and to forge stronger partnership in dealing with the challenges where they still exist.

The district mayor Radjab Mbonyumuvunyi chaired the meeting which was also attended by all sector executive secretaries.

 The mayor noted that the security status in the district continue to improve but called for ownership and stronger partnership in the implementation of security plans to preserve security mainly through community engagements. Read more

Impact of road safety drive in Western region

Following the launch of the road safety campaign early this month to educate the public on how safe to use the road, Police in the Western Province say the exercise has played an impact in the reduction of accidents in the region.

Speaking during a morning show – Waramutse Rwanda (Good morning Rwanda) – on Rwanda Television on Monday, Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Emmanuel Karasi, the Western region Police commander said that accidents reduced by about 48 percent between October and November.

“In October, we recorded 23 road accidents including nine fatalities, but we have registered 12 accidents that include three serious ones since the beginning of this month. This however doesn’t mean that one or two accidents are acceptable; but we appreciate the increasing ownership of passengers reporting reckless drivers,” ACP Karasi said. Read more 

Even a single life lost in accident is unacceptable, says Police 

Rwanda National Police (RNP) maintained that even a single life lost in road accidents is unacceptable and preventable if all road users act humanly respecting traffic rules and regulations.

While appearing on a live talkshow on Radio Rwanda on Sunday on road safety, Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Rafiki Mujiji said that effective prevention of fatalities starts with individual responsibility of drivers, motorcyclists, cyclists, passengers and pedestrians.

The panelists also included representatives of transport companies; RFTC, ATPR, and the federation of motorcyclists – Ferwacotamo.

“It’s a matter of mindset change. It doesn’t require you to know how to read and write to regulate your speed, respect pedestrian pathways, Zebra crossing, traffic lights, stop using a phone while driving and overtaking or parking in dangerous corners, which continue to be the leading cause of fatal accidents,” ACP Mujiji said.
