Western Province: Police-Media interaction session focuses on accountability

Having a citizen-centered spirit, being accountable to the public, sharing information and mutual trust took the center stage in the Police-Media interaction Session held in Karongi District. 

The session held on June 30 drew media practitioners and Police Officers operating in the Western Province along with local leaders in the province. Media Interaction Session is under the theme: "Strengthening Partnership for quality service delivery"

Presiding over the meeting, the Provincial Executive Secretary, Pierre Célestin Habiyaremye said; “Such Interactions are geared at enhancing performance and promoting working relations to bridge the gap between authorities and the public.” Read more

Ruhango: Police recovers 27 stolen computers

Twenty-seven laptop computers stolen from Groupe Scolaire Nyamagana last month, were recovered by the Police and arrested six people connected to the theft.

The laptops are part of 30 that were stolen after suspected thieves broke into the school computer laboratory at night through the window, Police said. 

The Southern Province Police spokesperson, Inspector of Police (IP) Emmanuel Kayigi, said that the computers were recovered in separate police operations from suspected thieves. Read more

Over 120 Police officers complete VIP Protection and firefighting courses

A total of 123 officers completed two separate courses on VIP Protection and Firefighting at the Police Training School (PTS) Gishari in Rwamagana District.

At least 25 Police officers completed a month-long Training of Trainers on VIP Protection, the first of its kind to be conducted by Rwanda National Police.

Other 98, who include police officers, prison wardens and those from private security companies completed the two-month training either in Basic Firefighting and Rescue course or Training of Trainers in Basic Firefighting and Rescue.

The Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIGP) in charge of Operations, Dan Munyuza, while officiating at the closing of the courses, said that professionalism is largely built on training and discipline. Read more 

Youth volunteers engage in human security activities

Members of Rwanda Youth Volunteers in Community Policing conducted special Umuganda in Ruhango and Nyabihu districts where they were joined by residents in human security activities.

The activities include improving sanitation and hygiene through construction of toilets, laying bricks and construction of houses for the disadvantaged, donating livestock as well as supporting youth cooperatives and preparing organic gardens.

In Nyabihu, they donated two bicycles to a cyclist cooperative.

The youth countrywide activities are mainly focused on raising awareness against crimes as well as supporting the country's development agenda. Read more 

Campaign against drug abuse continued in Huye

The six-month government campaign against drug abuse continued in Huye District where thousands of residents including motorcyclists converged in Ngoma Sector, where messages on ill-effects of psychotropic substances were delivered.

The campaign is being conducted under the International Day against Drug Abuse.

The International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking falls on June 26 each year and seeks to raise awareness of the major problem that illicit drugs present to society.

The Ministry of Health is leading the countrywide sensitization programme.

The Head of the Mental Health Department at Rwanda Biomedical Centre, Dr. Yvonne Kayiteshonga, while speaking to residents, noted that drug abuse is a public health issues which must be dealt with comprehensively. Read more

UNFPA regional director commend Rwanda’s approach on GBV

The United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) regional director for East and Southern Africa, Dr. Julitta Onabanjo said that Rwanda’s clarity and the political will in addressing Gender Based Violence and Child Abuse is worth emulating by countries within the region.

She made the remarks at Rwanda National Police (RNP) General Headquarters, where she held a meeting with the Inspector General of Police (IGP) Emmanuel K. Gasana, and also toured the Regional Centre of Excellence on GBV and Child Abuse and Isange One Stop Center.

“We commend Rwanda for the efforts put in place to end Gender Based Violence and Child Abuse. The UN has partnered with the Government of Rwanda on several grounds to put an end to the vice. Covering the region of 23 countries, I can benchmark how well Rwanda has responded to address these challenges,” said Dr. Onabanjo. Read more 

Rwanda, Uganda police forces conduct joint training

Sixteen officers from Rwanda Nation Police (RNP) and Uganda Police Force (UPF) conducted a week-long intensive training in key areas of crime management.

The training held at RNP General Headquarters in Kacyiru focused mainly on critical criminal investigation knowledge and enhancing skills, which subsequently enables prosecution to build strong cases in court.

The RNP acting Commissioner for Criminal Investigation Department (CID), Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Jean Marie Twagirayezu, while officiating at the opening of the training on behalf of the Inspector General of Police, said that continuous training of police officers in various fields such as criminal investigations, traffic inspections among others, is a move in a positive direction towards achieving RNP’s vision of “people in Rwanda are safe, involved and reassured.” Read more

160 Police officers train on response to environmental crimes

A total of 160 Police officers attached to the Criminal Investigation Department completed two-day training on fighting environmental crimes including implementation of laws and policies.

The training was organized by Rwanda National Police (RNP) in partnership with Rwanda Environmental Management Authority (REMA).

It covered environmental laws and policies, awareness on protection and reporting offences committed in mining sector as well as interview and interrogation of witnesses and suspects of environmental crimes. Read more

Police intensify crackdown on forged driver’s licence

Last week, Police in Ngororero District arrested one Venuste Bambuzurwaho; a commercial motorcyclist was arrested after he was found holding a forged driver’s licence.

Preliminary investigations indicate Bambuzurwaho had bought the forged permit at Rwf300, 000, apparently from someone, who convinced him enough to believe that he was a ‘Police broker.’

Chief Inspector of Police (CIP) Emmanuel Kabanda, the spokesperson for traffic and road safety department, said: “Operations have been going on for more than a year now. These operations are also part of the day-to-day duties of traffic officers on roads across the country to verify the authenticity of permits.” 

“Since last year, we have arrested about 140 people majority motorcyclists, who were found holding forged driver’s licence, and these operations will continue concurrently on daily basis across the country,” he warned. Read more

Over 70 vehicles impounded for defying speed governor policy

At least 73 vehicles have been impounded in the the Western and Southern provinces in an operation to enforce the national compulsory speed governor policy.

The impounded vehicles are those that transport people, mainly coaster buses, and those that transport goods, which fall under the speed governor policy.

The spokesperson for the traffic department, Chief Inspector of Police (CIP) Emmanuel Kabanda, said: “This is a national road safety policy that was instituted under the Presidential decree of 2015 to prevent accidents, which has to be respected.” Read more
