Banks, Telecoms, Police in a new synergy to counter cyber threats
With the technological advancement and new innovations coming on the Rwandan market every day, financial institutions, telecoms, security organs and several institutions dealing in digital affairs must be on top of their game and fully prepared to prevent, manage and mitigate the risks associated with cyber security.
In so doing, concerned organs must create synergies as a way of enhancing information sharing among themselves so as they could collectively assess cyber security threats and confront them in a stronger manner.
This was part of the views shared at a one-day consultative meeting held yesterday at Rwanda National Police (RNP) and attended by top officials representing all financial institutions in the country, telecoms and security organs.
Speaking at the opening of the meeting, the Inspector General of Police (IGP) Emmanuel K Gasana reminded attendants that, government has developed a National Cyber Security Strategy and established a National Cyber Security Agency that links security organs public and private sector agencies. RNP bids farewell to retired officers
Rwanda National Police (RNP), yesterday, officially bid farewell to 111 officers, who retired from active service, last week. The retirees include two Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP), 27 senior and 82 junior officers. Among those retired are eight women officers.
The official send-off party was held at the RNP General Headquarters in Kacyiru, and presided over by the Minister of Justice and Attorney General, Johnston Busingye.
Present was also the Inspector General of Police (IGP) Emmanuel K. Gasana and DIGPs; Dan Munyuza of Operations and Juvenal Marizamunda of Administration and Personnel.
Minister Busingye thanked the retirees for their patriotism and distinguished service to their country, urging them to exhibit the same discipline in the new life.
He further paid tribute to those, who took part in the country’s armed liberation and the contribution of each and everyone in building a professional Police force. Read more
Police intensify enforcement of regulations protecting potato farmers
Rwanda National Police (RNP) has intensified operations against irregularities in irish potato business arresting 49 people for allegedly inflating prices and violating standard regulations meant to equally benefit all players in the business supply chain.
Those arrested in different parts of the country include traders, transporters and employees at potato collection centres, who were conniving to cheat farmers and consumers.
The Ministry of Commerce, recently, set standard guidelines to regulate the irish potato business after it emerged that farmers were incurring gross losses at the hands of traders, who would also fraudulently make abnormal profits through hiked retail prices and cheating final consumers.
Under the new regulations, traders can only buy potatoes from collection centres managed by cooperatives of potato farmers; only collection centres should buy potatoes from farmers at a farm price of between Rwf135 and Rwf175 per kilogramme depending on the type; no consumer should pay more than Rwf250 at retail price; and traders should also have forms indicating the origin of the irish and signed by respective collection centre. Police, partners to plant over 50, 000 hectares of trees
Rwanda National Police (RNP) together with its partners plans to plant at least 50763 of trees across the country in the next two years as part of the implementation of the national afforestation programme.
The exercise also falls within the existing agreement between the force and the Ministry of Forestry signed in November last year to jointly partner to protect, conserve and develop lands and forestry.
Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Damas Gatare, the commissioner for Community Policing in RNP, said that 45803 hectares will constitute the agro-forestry land while 4960 others will be on hilly and other forestry gazetted areas. Read more
Transporters urged to mind safety as students return to school
Rwanda National Police (RNP) has urged public transporters, head teachers and parents to facilitate and ensure safety of students as they start returning back to school today.
According to the Ministry of Education, the academic year 2018, kicks off on Monday next week but students will start heading to school on Friday 19 depending on the proximity of the schools.
Speaking about Police’s preparations to oversee students’ return to school, the spokesperson for traffic and road safety, Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Emmanuel Kabanda, “Transportation of students should be done in a smooth manner with no interruptions or setbacks. Transporters shouldn’t violate road safety standards like over speeding to scrambles for students, which can result into accidents.
“As an institution charged with public safety, RNP is mandated to ensure that students travel back to school safely as well as other passengers proceed with their businesses without major interruptions,” said the spokesperson. Read more
CoK, RNP launch second phase of security and hygiene campaign
The Mayor of City of Kigali Pascal Nyamulinda yesterday presided over the launch of the the second phase of the seventh edition of the “Security and Hygiene” campaign in an event held at the City Hall and attended by several officials along with Police Officers.
Speaking at the launch, the lord Mayor challenged bars, restaurants owners and markets to strictly observe public health guidelines by ensuring that hygiene and sanitation are monitored and frequently improved.
In referring to the findings of the just concluded phase, Mayor Nyamulinda said that some public places were found to be lacking in terms of hygiene which could threaten the health of the public if no improvements are made.
The second phase of the seventh edition of the Security and Hygiene will run under the Theme; “keeping Kigali city clean, green and safe”
Such campaigns are normally aimed at bringing various players on board to improve human security activities through strengthening security and hygiene within the city. Read more
