[PHOTOS]: Minister Kaboneka challenges youth to drive security, development agenda

The Minister of Local Government, Francis Kaboneka said that the “just cause” and “ideals” that inspired the youth to sacrifice their lives to wage an armed struggle 27 years ago to liberate the country has provided a firm ground for the young people to carry on with the duty to ensure sustainable security and development.

The minister made the remark on Sunday while presiding over the third Congress of Rwanda Youth Volunteers in Community Policing held at Kigali Exhibition and Conference Village.

About 500 members of the youth organization took part in the congress to discuss further strategies related to policing and community development. Read more

[PHOTOS]: Call for concerted efforts take centre stage at anti-corruption meeting

Stakeholders from the Justice sector in Rwanda met yesterday at Rwanda National Police (RNP) General Headquarters in Kacyiru to devise effective joint efforts to prevent and eliminate all sorts of graft, and bring offenders to justice.

During the one day consultative meeting to mark the day against corruption in Rwanda, various experts in the justice sector observed that the changing nature of corruption and tendencies of negative solidarity need “collective action and positive solidarity” to counter graft.

They called for a permanent and sustained inter-agency collaboration throughout the entire process of adjudication to improve the levels of conviction and prevent new cases of corruption occurring.

The meeting brought together the justice sector and civil society institutions that are involved in fighting corruption. Read more

Rwanda, Tanzania police force launch joint operations against cross-border crimesRwanda National Police (RNP) and Tanzania Police Forces (TPF) have launched operations along the common borders in a bid to combat crimes that are cross-border in nature

Delegations from the two sides met on December 1 at Rusumo One Stop Border Post and designed operational procedures as part of the implementation of the existing bilateral cooperation between the two forces.

Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Dismas Rutaganira, the Eastern region Police Commander headed the Rwandan delegation while the Tanzanian delegation was headed by SACP Augustine Allomi, the RPC of Kagera region.

It was also witnessed by the mayor of Kirehe District Gerald Kazungu and his counterpart of Ngara region, Lt. Col. Michael Mntenjele. Read More

Thirty arrested in Highway operations as Police tightens grip against graft

Police operations conducted on the night of December 06 along major highways cross the country let to the arrest of 30 drivers who attempted to bribe traffic police officers.

Of the 30 drivers arrested, nine were arrested along different roads within central region – Kigali and were paraded before the media at Kicukiro Police station where they are currently held.

Others arrested include eight from the Eastern Region, two in the North, four in the South and Six in the Western Region.

According to the Traffic Police Spokesperson, Chief Inspector of Police (CIP), Emmanuel Kabanda the operation was conducted in the framework of the ongoing Anti-Corruption Week that is running under the theme: “Fighting Corruption is an obligation for all.”

“We conduct such operations frequently and arrest drivers; we will not stop these operations until everyone understands the dangers of corruption. The arrested drivers have families that are now being affected by the arrests. Also, their businesses are halted because of such a reckless act,” said the spokesperson. Read more

Five arrested over child labour

Police in Karongi district is holding five people for allegedly involving under aged children in hard labour.

Police said that the suspects, all residents of Murehe cell, Twumba sector have been exploiting the under aged children, subjecting them to labour exploitation while working in the homes and farmlands

According to the District Police Commander (DPC) Superintendent of Police (SP) Emmanuel Karuranga child labour is outlawed in Rwanda and the law defines a child as anyone under the age of 16.

“These people were exploiting children as young as ten years of age; this can’t be allowed to continue children must be in school not in the fields working,” said the DPC.

SP Karuranga explained that when his office got information on the exploitation of the children, it made immediate intervention and arrested the suspects.

He applauded local leaders and well-meaning parents to always give information to police about such incidents. Read more

600kgs of minerals seized in operation against illegal dealings in Ngororero

Police in Ngororero District have arrested five people in connection with illegal dealings in minerals.

Their arrest on December 8, followed the seizure of over 600 kilograms of various minerals from them, believed to have been obtained illegally.

Police identified the suspects as Jean Ngabonzima, 36, Jean Baptist Habimanab, 31, Epimaque  Nzungize, 34, Jean Chrisostome  Ngabonzima, 40, and  Joseline Itangishaka, 37.

The District Police Commander, Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Marc Gasangwa, who confirmed the arrest, said that “investigations have been instituted to establish the source of the valuable metals.”

“We received information from residents that the group was suspected to be possessing minerals, whose source was not known,” SSP Gasangwa said. Read more

RYVCP Umuganda Valued at over Rwf 15 M

Members of the Rwanda Youth Volunteers in Community Policing (RYVCP) from across the country have this Saturday, carried out Community Work (Umuganda) which is valued in monetary terms  at  over Rwf 15m.

The activity was carried out in all 416 Sectors across the country

Members of the RYVCP were joined in the activity by officers from Rwanda National Police and Rwanda Defence Forces; they did variety of activities including building houses, toilets, kitchen gardens for the most disadvantaged residents.

Jean Bosco Mutangana, the Commissioner in charge of Training in RYVCP, said they (members of the organisation) feel proud to be active agents of positive change to the country. Read more
