[PHOTOS]: RNP reassures security during festive season, as crimes drop by 5%

Rwanda National Police (RNP) has reassured that security will continue to prevail in the country even during the forthcoming Christmas and New Year festivities.

The force also appealed to the general public to enjoy in the usual peaceful manner not to disrupt beliefs and celebrations of other people.

While opening a periodic Police-media interaction, yesterday, aimed at ‘strengthening partnerships for quality service delivery,’ the Inspector General of Police (IGP) Emmanuel K. Gasana, said that “police value the contribution of the news media in informing and educating the public on security related matters.”

The periodic session brings together the Police and media practitioners to discuss issues pertaining security and partnership with the media in policing.

The Police Chief said that the safety, security and peace that people in Rwanda enjoy today will continue to be fostered in partnership with the general public and the media in particular, which jointly raising awareness and fighting any threat to the wellbeing of the people. Read more

Police officers, RDF reservists in joint training on environmental protection

About 100 police officers and reservists of Rwanda Defense Forces (RDF), yesterday, started a joint training on efforts to fight environmental crimes and other potential threats to human security.

The two-day training underway at the Rwanda National Police (RNP) General Headquarters in Kacyiru was officially opened by the Inspector General of Police (IGP) Emmanuel K. Gasana.

The joint exercises that include 80 judicial police officers and 20 reservists looks to enhance their understanding on environmental matters, laws and investigation of related crimes.

It falls under the existing framework between RNP and Rwanda Environmental Management Authority (REMA) to fight all sorts of environmental crimes.

The IGP noted that effective response to challenges to human security and eliminating threats to environment necessitated collective approach at all levels. Read more

[PHOTOS]: Police call for environmental protection in Special Community Work

Police has this Saturday joined residents of Kami Village, in Gasharu Cell, Kinyinya Sector in Gasabo District in a special Community Work (Umuganda).

The activity was organized by Rwanda National Police in partnership li. It was organized in the framework of  RNP’s ongoing efforts to preserve the environment and fight criminal offences that endangers the environment,

The activity focused on removing garbage from trenches for easy water passage, cutting off shrubs, and leveling a land where trees will be planted.

Commissioner of Police (CP), Emmanuel Butera in charge of Operations in RNP, thanked the good turn up of residents for the activity. Read more  

Police hands over recovered electronics to owners

At least five people, yesterday, received their stolen electronics, which are among assorted equipment recovered in separate police operations in the City of Kigali, recently.

The items returned to rightful owners include four computer laptops and a flat television screen.

The handover was held at Kigali metropolitan offices in Remera, where other other recovered electronics are displayed for owners' identification and collection.

“Operations are continuous to recover equipment reportedly stolen, but to also crackdown on electronic shops which deal in stolen items,” Supt. Emmanuel Hitayezu, the Police spokesperson for the City of Kigali, said.

“So far, a number of criminals have been arrested and were either prosecuted or still under judicial process,” he added.

“The established strong community policing relationship with the public is facilitating the whole operation process in tracking suspects but also locating and recovering stolen items,” he noted. Read more

Man arrested with 5.000 forged Euros

Police in Kigali is holding a 63-year old man after he was found with counterfeit euros amounting to 5000.

Jean Nkurunziza was apprehended by police in Nyabugogo bus terminal on Sunday.

He was at the time trying to defraud a forex bureau, where he was  attempting to exchange the forged notes, Police said.

According to Supt. Emmanuel Hitayezu, the central region Police spokesperson, Nkurunzinza presented 100 fake euros in €50 denominations, at the bureau to exchange it in Rwanda francs. Read more

Ubiquitous motorbike taxis, snake through gridlocked traffic, navigate between cars on roads and provide much-needed employment for young people.

The tiny bikes have become an integral part of Rwanda’s transport system and development.

Commercial motorcycles are the fastest mode of road transportation in Rwanda. They are not only swift, but also reliable in times of emergencies - when vehicles get stuck in jam or can't access certain areas, these motorcycles slither their way through with ease.

Small, fast as an ostrich and conveniently able to negotiate complex corners, they are our answer to this Kigali’s stressful traffic jam during peak hours. But they have also become agents of chaos and the second leading cause of fatal accidents.

While commercial motorcycles are helping to reduce youth unemployment – the impact of a serious injury can prove catastrophic for riders, their families and families of all those affected by the deadly behaviours of commercial motorcyclists.

Behind this convenience lays sad untold tales of victims; livelihoods have been lost and dreams shattered.

“When I got a motorcycle accident, I lost my means of livelihood,” says Jean Marie Nsazimana, a rider from Rusizi, who spoke from his hospital bed in the orthopedics department at Rwanda Miliatry Hospital.Read more

Illicit Brew and Factory Equipments Destroyed, Valued at Over Frw 7M

A joint Police and local authorities operation conducted on Monday in Rwamagana District destroyed illegal distillery that was making illicit substances.

At least 9,650 litters of illicit brew were seized from the factory in Karuyenzi Village of Bicaca Cell in Karenge Sector.

The seized substances were destroyed yesterday in presence of residents.

The District Police Commander, Supt. James Rutaremara, said the factory belonged to one Innocent Harerimana, who is still at large.

He added that the factory was not licensed by Rwanda Standards Board (RSB) as a prerequisite. Read more
