RNP, Media Commission discuss new ‘media law’

The Rwanda National Police (RNP) and Rwanda Media Commission (RMC) held a one day consultative meeting August 7 to discuss and have a common understanding on the new media law in Rwanda.

Rwanda Media Commission is a media self-regulatory organ established under the new law promulgated last year, which also include access to information law designed to access information to the public.

The meeting held at the RNP headquarters in Kacyiru was attended mainly by officers from the Criminal Investigation Department (CID).

Fred Muvunyi, the chairman of RMC commended the existing working relations with the Rwanda National Police and the media fraternity in Rwanda.

The access to information law, partly, requires all public and concerned private institutions to appoint officers in charge of information.

Muvunyi, however, said there is still need for strengthened partnership to raise awareness among Police officers on the new law to further harmonize and develop the media industry in the country for the good of Rwandans.

Senior Superintendent Urbain Mwiseneza thanked RMC for the initiative to brief and shade more light on the new law adding that the force has taken steps forward to implement it.

In line with this law, the RNP appointed spokespersons for the four regions and the City of Kigali and one for Traffic and Road Safety Department.
