The Rwanda National Police (RNP) has organized a football tournament that will bring together its 12 units in a month-long healthy exercise meant to support and develop sports within the force.
Group A1 includes Police Training School (PTS) Gishari, Mayange and Police General Headquarters; Group A2 – Canine Brigade, National Police College (NPC) and Interforce.
The Central, Northern and Eastern regions will tussle in group B1 while Traffic, Western and Southern regions will face off in group B2.
In semi finals, the winner in Group A1 will face the winner in Group A2 while the winner in Group B1 will face their opponent from Group B2.
Winners in the two groups will face off in the final to be played on October 23.
In the opening matches, PTS drew 2-2 with the RNP headquarters; NPC defeated Interforce 3-1; Central Region was stunned 4-1 by the Eastern Region while the Western Region left it late to grab a winner against Traffic in a 3-2 hard fought win in Muhanga.
Assistant Inspector of Police (AIP) Diane Ntakirutimana, the Director of sports in RNP, said the tournament, the first of its kind, was organized to keep the officers fit and healthy.
“Professionalism goes with fitness and being healthy. But again, it is in line with promoting and supporting sports development within the force and in the country,” said AIP Ntakirutimana.
“Similar tournaments will also be organized in other sports domains to select talented players who can be included in Rwanda National Police sports teams.”
RNP now has a football and handball clubs, which are among the best teams that has players that represent the country on national teams.
