The Environmental Protection Unit (EPU), a Rwanda National Police (RNP) arm charged with fighting environmental degradation, on April 4, continued its environment protection campaign to Ngororero District, where leaders and residents were given an overview on human activities that affect the environment.
The awareness brought together officials charged with environmental protection, agronomists from all sectors of Ngororero as well as those involved in mining.
The director of EPU, Supt. David Bwimba pointed out the policies and laws that govern environment reminding them about the punishments against such illegal environmental acts.
He outlined cutting of trees, charcoal burning, illegal mining activities including illegal miners and those who violate standards, are some of the things that affect the environment.
He also mentioned about soil erosion, poaching, illegal fishing and burning of waste in gardens as other human behaviours that affect the ecosystem.
“It is everyone’s accountability to take a lead in preventing and reporting environmental crimes in neighborhoods. We need to come together, preserve our environment by planting trees and protect our natural resources” he added.
Senior Supt. Beline Mukamana emphasised on information sharing to help the Police to enforce the law on environmental protection.
She also emphasised the need to plant more trees, fight deforestation and charcoal burning in particular as well as illegal mining activities where some minerals are washed in wells, one of the things which contaminate water bodies.
The campaign, which started last week, will be extended in all districts across the country as a move to find solutions to environmental crimes in each district, and to jointly find effective response against such.
