Eighteen canine brigade officers from the Rwanda National Police (RNP) on Friday, March 6, completed a two-week 'Bonding and Familiarization' training, held at the unit headquarters in Masoro, Gasabo District.
The training was conducted in partnership with the Police Dog Center Holland (PDCH) to equip police officers with the standard skills and knowledge required for effective dog handling, strengthening the capacity and professionalism of the K-9 unit.
Speaking at the closing ceremony, Commissioner of Police (CP) George Rumanzi, Commissioner for Operations and Public Order, said the training marks an important milestone in the RNP’s capacity-building strategy.
“This training represents an important milestone in strengthening the professionalism and operational effectiveness of our canine unit. The skills and discipline you demonstrated during the exercises reflect the progress you have made over the past two weeks,” CP Rumanzi said.

He emphasized the importance of a strong bond between handlers and their dogs for operational success.
“You should take good care of your buddy dogs in terms of health, welfare, and proper handling for operational effectiveness. The effectiveness of any operational canine is reflected through the handler’s professionalism,” he added.
CP Rumanzi urged the graduates to apply the knowledge gained to enhance public safety and security.

Anoldus Van Den Oetelaar, Chief Executive Officer of Police Dog Center Holland, commended the strong partnership with the Rwanda National Police and stressed the importance of continuous learning for canine handlers.
“Our partnership with the Rwanda National Police continues to grow stronger, and we are proud to support the development of its canine unit. Continuous learning and exposure are essential for professional dog handlers.”
The training forms part of ongoing efforts by the Rwanda National Police to enhance the operational capabilities of its specialized units in maintaining public safety and security.
