Renewed warning to Motorcyclists over breach of traffic rules

Despite the tremendous decrease of road traffic-related offences and accidents, some Motorcycle taxi operators have continued to breach traffic rules which has continued to cause accidents and loss of lives.

Sup.Jean Marie Vianney Ndushabandi, the Spokesperson of the Department of of Traffic and Road Safety said some motorists over-load, which makes them lose control when riding.

"Overloading is against road traffic rules and puts lives of both the motorcyclist and passenger at risk because you are vulnerable to loss of control anytime and we cannot let this continue," Supt. Ndushabandi warned.

He also said that some motorists operate without legal documents like driving licence with some of them still below the legal riding age.

On March 16, Police in Kigali intercepted a motorcycle taxi operator who had on board a passenger and luggage.

The motorcyclist also had no driving licence and the legal documents of the motorcycle.

"This is a warning to whoever is operating through illegal means like having no driving permit, overloading and going against other road safety measures," he warned.

He also appealed to them to wear operating jackets and avoid bad maneuvers and overspeeding.

"We have put in place stern measures deal with defiant motorcyclists," he explained.

Majority of the accidents are caused by motorcycles according to statistics from the department of Traffic and Road Safety.
