Regional training on sexual and gender-based violence investigation ends in Kigali

The Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIGP) in charge of Administration and Personnel, DCG Jeanne Chantal Ujeneza, on Friday, June 27, officially closed a 10-day regional training on sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV) investigations held in Kigali.

The specialized course brought together 20 police officers from nine Eastern Africa Standby Force (EASF) member states, including Rwanda, Sudan, Burundi, Comoros, Ethiopia, Kenya, Djibouti, Somalia, and Uganda.

The training aimed to enhance regional security forces' capacity to address sexual and gender-based violence, particularly in peacekeeping operations.

“I commend you for your dedication and commitment during this training,” she said. “I urge you to become ambassadors in the fight against gender-based violence in your countries and during peacekeeping deployments.”

DCG Ujeneza emphasized the importance of the skills gained, highlighting their relevance to conducting investigations and leading interviews during international missions.

Commissioner of Police Ali Said Bacar, Head of the Police Component at EASF, underscored the essential role of law enforcement in peacekeeping.

“This is a true sign of commitment to ensuring the continued efficiency of our organization. Police officers are often the first responders when citizens face conflicts and gender-based violence,” Bacar said.

He urged participants to carry forward the knowledge gained and apply it responsibly in the field.

The training covered key areas, including crime scene management, investigative decision-making, stress management, partner collaboration, and strategies for prevention and response to SGBV.
