Regional Police students learn how ‘home-grown solutions’ play central role in development

Police officers from eight regional countries attending the 3rd intake of the Senior Command and Staff Course at the National Police College (NPC) in Musanze district joined residents of Shingiro sector on September 27 in a monthly community work locally known as Umuganda where they built a house for a 94-year old man identified as Emmanuel Kiroro and gave him an assortment of domestic facilities including beddings and foodstuff.

They also took part in the rehabilitation of a secondary school located in Shingiro sector.

The exercise also meant to give light to the police students on how home-grown initiatives can spur development.

The officers are from Uganda, Kenya, Burundi, Tanzania, Ethiopia, Gambia, Namibia and Rwanda, the host.

Commissioner of Police (CP) Cyprien Gatete, the Commandant of the College said the communal work acquainted the officer with how police-community partnership is critical and how it brings together locals to discuss and find solutions to societal issues related to security and development.

He urged residents to maintain the good culture of owning government development programmes and to play a key role in crime prevention through community policing.

Hon. Therese Murekatete commended the existing good partnership between members of the general public and Rwanda National Police in security and development related matters.

This exercise, she said, is a fundamental approach by citizens to find solutions to some of their problems.

“It is important that every citizen realize the need to participate to this activity and make it a culture as the country moves towards self reliance,” she noted.
