The Rwanda National Police conducted an anti-crime awareness campaign in Nyabiheke and Kiziba refugee camps in Gatsibo and Karongi districts respectively and urged them to strengthen their efforts against all sorts of criminality.
The two-day exercise which started on Monday is part of the Rwanda National Police’s continued exercise to sensitize all people living in Rwanda to be part of the community policing strategy by sharing information on anything that can cause insecurity in their localities.
Community policing strategy brings the general public in solving localized problems or makes specific improvements that enhance the overall quality of life in the community.
This crime prevention approach has increased a sense of responsibility for personal safety and problem-solving among citizens and shifts from a predominantly reactive response to service calls, to proactive problem solving and increases effectiveness at resolving community-wide problems.
Inspector of Police Bonaventure Twizere urged them to crimes like drug abuse, gender-based violence and environmental degradation such as cutting of trees.
They were also educated on family planning and HIV/AIDS, where they were urged to produce few children they are in position to look after.
He further appealed to them to always share timely information with security organs to ensure peace and security is maintained in camps.
There are 14,117 and 16,401 refugees in Nyabiheke and Kiziba camps respectively, majority Congolese.
Jacques Kanyangwe, the manager of Kiziba camp commended Rwanda National Police for the regular visits where educative programs are delivered regarding pertaining security in the camp, environmental protection and social welfare.
Kanyangwe said this has contributed significantly to the decrease of unwanted pregnancies.
Similar campaigns will also be conducted in other camps across the country.
