Refugees have been advised not to keep mum on security challenges they are facing in their camps especially those related to gender based violence, create internal measures against abuse of drugs and be on watch out for human traffickers.
Inspector of Police (IP) Viviane Umurisa made the call on December 12 while speaking to refugees in Kiziba camp in Karongi district.
"There are gender-related offences committed especially against women and girls and other criminals businesses like sell and consumption of illicit drugs and narcotics conducted in refugee camps that go unmentioned partly because victims don't report them," IP Umurisa, Karongi District Community Liaison Officer, said.
"These drugs are the source to such security issues; break the silence, if you are offended be bold and report it so that the offenders face justice," she added.
She observed that drugs are a threat to human life adding that they fuel domestic conflicts and assault in particular.
Reacting on the issue of trafficking in human beings, she noted that although this is a rare case in Rwanda, they should be on watch out about people who take advantage of them and promise them better offers, especially abroad with intent to traffic them for exploitative and hard labour activities.
