The Director of Anti-Narcotics Unit at Rwanda National Police (RNP), Superintendent Christophe Semuhungu called on Rwandan youths and students to desist from abusing drugs and concentrate on constructive activities that build their future and nation.
Supt. Semuhungu delivered the message on October 16 while addressing hundreds of pupils of Intwari Primary school in Nyarugenge District, who converged in Rwezamenyo Sector.
He strongly urged the students to report any drug dealers who target young people.
“Drugs can become central to a person’s life and can affect their personal relationships, ability to study and work, mental health and quality of life,” Supt. Semuhungu said.
“Perhaps you have seen your colleagues or neighbours who didn’t manage to be here with you pursuing studies because they were derailed by drugs. That should serve as an eye opener on how dangerous drugs like cannabis can be,” he added.
“Anybody can be affected by illicit drugs, and often they think they are in control of their situation. This means that many drug users think they need no any help dealing with the habit, but there are things you can do to support them. Report them so that they are rehabilitated to overcome the habit”
He urged them to always be quick to provide police with information on people who sell such drugs so as to cut the supply chain.
Uzamukunda Zamida, the head teacher of Intwari Primary School observed that tendencies of drug abuse, although rare in the school, have affected some youngsters in the areas of Rwezamenyo and Nyamirambo.
He welcomed the campaign in schools, saying that it gives a platform to the youth to understand more on the dangers of abusing drugs, and how to live a positive life.
He urged the pupils to be good cadres adding that “the advice we received today leaves us with a challenge to make this fight part of the school curriculum.”
Alice Dusabe, one of the pupils, said: “Today, I understood how harmful cannabis can be, and how I can advise my friends to live a positive life free from drugs.”
