The Rwanda National Police department of Traffic and Road Safety visited Kacyiru I Primary School in Gasabo District on April 29 where they taught the pupils about laws, rules and regulations governing road safety.
The lesson is part of the traffic department's ongoing awareness to to ensure enforcement of road traffic rules , this relationship will leave a lasting impression on the children.
While speaking to the pupils, Chief Supt. Anselme Ahimana, who is in charge of training in the traffic department demonstrated to them how to cross the road including looking at both sides of the road before crossing, using zebra crossings and pedestrian walkways.
He also enlightened them on the meaning of traffic light signaling devices positioned at road intersections, pedestrian crossings and other locations to control competing flows of traffic.
The green light allows traffic to proceed in the direction denoted; yellow light provides warning that the signal will be changing from green to red or from red to green; red signal prohibits any pedestrian or traffic from proceeding.
He also reminded them to desist from common habits of playing in the middle of the road, be vigilant and that in case they want to stop a vehicle so that they cross the road, they should raise a hand towards the direction where a vehicle is coming from but wait until the automobile stops for them to cross.
Kacyiru Sector executive Secretary, Patricie Murekatete thanked Rwanda National Police for empowering and educating the pupils to ensure their own safety on road.
"We requested police to give these pupils a lesson on road safety so that they also get acquainted with road traffic rules and ensure their own security while walking on streets and we are sure this will also contribute to safety along roads."
Joy Umutesi, the school head teacher said: "It was a common phenomenon to find them playing in the middle of the road especially during lunch time. Such lessons are therefore important and we believe it will change their conduct while walking on streets."
The Traffic and Road Safety Department conducts such awareness among road users to educate them on traffic rules as a way of influencing the behavior of road user and improving road safety.
