The Rwanda National Police therefore cautions the public against this act, and appeals to anyone that has information about individuals involved in this act, to inform nearby security organs and authorities.

On Wednesday, Police in Bugesera apprehended 23 people in Nyamata sector, Maranyundo cell, in connection with environmental related crimes.

Twelve of the suspects, who are currently detained at Nyamata Police station, were found felling trees while others were mining illegally.
The arrest followed a noble action by area residents, who informed authorities of the suspects’ illegal acts.

For one to cut trees, they need to first seek authorizations from local leaders in the area.

In the same way, Police in Kayonza District also intercepted a truck carrying tree stumps of a local plant called umushikiri.

The Eastern Region Spokesperson, Senior Superintendent (SSP) Bénoit Nsengiyumva said: “Everyone should be aware that preserving the environment contributes to the productivity in agriculture, and even the few that still indulge in these acts, should be stand warned.”

He added: “We urge the public to continue the noble campaign to report such people involved in these illegal acts.”
