Police have cautioned the general public against “criminal acts of bribery” warning that “there will be no mercy” to anyone caught in such malpractices.
The warning follows various cases in the recent past where a number of offenders have been arrested attempting to bribe police officers.
On December 17, a commercial motorcyclist identified as Theophile Kubwimana was arrested in Byimana sector of Ruhango district while attempting to offer a bribe of Rwf30, 000 to an officer.
Kubwimana criminal attempt was intended to seduce the officer at Byimana Police station to release his motorcycle after it had been impounded earlier for traffic related offences.
Inspector of Police (IP) Emmanuel Kayigi, the Police spokesperson for the Southern region, said: “Kubwimana had given his motorcycle to another person, who didn't have a driver's license, and on top of that the offender had overloaded with two passengers,” IP Kayigi said.
“On learning that his motorcycle had been impounded, Kubwimana rather than clearing the penalties, he went to the Police station and tried to seduce the officer with Rwf30000 to release his motorcycle, the officer informed his colleagues and he was immediately taken into custody for bribery,” he added.
He emphasized that “free services should be given free of charge; an offence can't be corrected with another offence, and no one should pay more that the recommended fee for any service.”
Bribery attracts a term of imprisonment of up to five years upon conviction, under the law.
