Public urged to strengthen partnership in crime prevention

The general public have been called upon to strengthen their partnership with Rwanda National Police (RNP) through the provision of timely information, in order to overcome crime and lawlessness in society.

The message was delivered on May 11 during a discussion in Ngororero District, which involved over 100 residents, including members of Community Policing Committees, school heads and religious leaders.

During the discussions, Christophe Uwingoga, in charge of Economic Affairs in the district, said that strong partnership with police is necessary to effectively reduce and ultimately prevent crime in the area.

“It takes everyone of us to work together in order to kick out criminal activities such as gender based violence and drug abuse. For a safer community, we need to trust Police with credible information that will help them in making our community safer,” he said.

“Be it in schools, marketplaces or neighborhoods, we can work together on providing analyses of crime patterns and report those we highly suspect of contributing to such crimes in order to aid police in doing their work.”

He also called upon local leaders, including school heads and religious leaders, to disperse the message of community policing and ensure that everyone understands their role in crime prevention.

The District Community Liaison Officer of Ngororero, Assistant Inspector of Police Alexandre Minani, noted that community policing was paramount in coordinating crime prevention initiatives, and emphasized more partnership between Police and communities.

“With Rwanda’s development and social economic progress increasing, it is more important for citizens to work together to prevent crime,” he said.

“Working together with police creates opportunities for everyone to have meaningful roles in community crime prevention. It also improves sense of security and quality of life by reducing crime.”
