Private Security Service Providers (PSSP)s have been urged to aim for “quality training” to fit in the current security trends.

Commissioner of Police (CP) Robert Niyonshuti, the Commissioner for Training and Development in Rwanda National Police (RNP) made the call on Tuesday during the meeting with owners and managers of private security firms at the RNP headquarters in Kacyiru.

CP Niyonshuti noted that training is the pillar to professional security institution and personnel in particular.

“If you want professional personnel, it has to start with the recruitment to select the best and give them worthy training. This means updating your training syllabus to be relevant to security trends,” CP Niyonshuti said.

He noted that training is continuous and emphasized for on-job training by security companies in order to further develop the skills and efficiency of staff in their duties.

“The security sector is advancing and dynamic; private security companies can’t stay behind. Rwanda National Police as a regulator is ready to assist in the process and avail experts to facilitate the training, in order to have professional guards,” said CP Niyonshuti.

The meeting was also in line with the international events to be held in Rwanda along the year, and in which private security firms also play a significant role in ensuring a smooth environment for visitors and locals at their different security deployements.

He further urged the managers to always ensure proper supervision of their staff for readiness and quality services.

“You guard some special and important areas in Rwanda. RNP took that into consideration and planned an on-job training for your staff partly in recognition of the important role you play in the security arena.”

About 800 private security personnel are set to benefit from the training.

Fidele Niyonshuti, the chairperson of Rwanda Private Security Association lauded RNP’s special initiative to train their staff saying that it will add value to their services.

“We still face many challenges when it comes to our staff’s professionalism; we believe this training will bring impact in the way our personnel work.”

There are 17 licensed private security companies in Rwanda with combined strengthen of 24, 000 personnel.
