Prevent children from accessing water bodies to avoid risks of drowning

In the recent past, there have been unfortunate cases of drowning especially teenagers some of who below 15 years of age.

In most cases, victims, whose families reside near water bodies like lakes, rivers, dams and streams are left unattended and sometimes drown while swimming or fishing in these dangerous waters.

This is partly at the expense of irresponsible parents. It has been found out that most of the victims play around these water bodies with or without knowledge of parents or guardians and even elderly bypassers careless to chase these youngsters from these areas.

On August 2, a 12-year old Louise Nyiraminani drowned in Lake Mirayi in Bugesera district while fetching water.

It is so unfortunate that parents can send children of this age to fetch water, worse still in a lake.

“It’s an obligation of parents to bare children from accessing such water bodies, but it even goes beyond father-mother role to all Rwandans to chase children away from these waters,” Senior Supt. Bénoit Nsengiyumva, Eastern region Police Spokesperson, said.
