Today, July 22, 2014, at about 7:30am, a tragic accident involving two public vehicles occurred in Kiziguro sector of Gatsibo district along Kagitumba-Kayonza highway.

The incident involved a coaster van, belonging to Excel travel agency that was headed to Kigali from Nyagatare which collided with a commuter omnibus plate number RAB 994M, which was en route to Nyagatare from Kayonza.

Sadly, 15 passengers including drivers of the two vehicles died on spot while 24 others were injured.

Security organs and medical services rushed to the scene and 12 who were seriously injured were airlifted to Rwanda Military Hospital and CHUK in Kigali for intensive medical care.

Preliminary investigations indicate that the accident was caused by over speeding and the driver of the van identified as Sylvian Nsabimana was at the time speaking on phone when he lost control, ramming into the omnibus which was coming from the opposite direction.

The Rwanda National Police expresses sincere condolences to the bereaved families and cautions drivers against over speeding and breaching traffic rules which continue to deprive people of their lives and destruction of property on the cost of irresponsible road users.
