Popularity of Mobile Police Station reaches Nyamasheke

Hundreds of residents in Nyamasheke District queued up to experience services offered by the Mobile Police Station Vehicle.

The vehicle started its toure the district on May 7, and packed in a market place in Mahembo Sector, where officers received residents in need of services offered by Rwanda National Police (RNP).

The Mobile Police Station Vehicle services were launched early in January, as an innovative tool through which RNP reaches out its services to the deepest and remotest societies.

Jean Hategekimana, one of the residents who presented a case report to Police expressed gratitude and urged RNP to come up with more innovative initiatives aimed to overcome crime and lawlessness.

“Although we live far away, Police has endeavored to reach out and to listen to us. This is a good gesture and a very crucial service, which reminds criminals that Rwandans are willing to work together to ensure safety,” Hategekimana said.

“Police should ensure that such services are always available because we need them - and we will ensure that we work with Police by bringing forward information that is useful in maintaining law and order.”

During this activity, Director of anti-Narcotic Unit in the Criminal Investigations Department, Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Urbain Mwiseneza, sensitized the community about the challenges and consequences of drug abuse and illicit brew, which fuel crimes such as gender-based-violence and theft in the area.

“Some of the reports we have received from residents through the Mobile Police Station Vehicle circle around gender-based-violence which is fueled by alcoholism and drug abuse. Responsible members of society should sensitize others about the dangers that such drugs pause to security,” he said.

“Remember to always alert Police whenever you are suspicious of any activity taking place in your communities, or if there is an individual or group of people who are undermining the safety of others.”

Jeanne Mukamusabyimana, in charge of Social Affairs in Mahembo Sector, also called on the youth to be responsible and concentrate on building their education and careers rather than join criminal gangs.

The Mobile Police Station Vehicle service is particularly extended to citizens residing or working in places located far away from Police stations, whereby, a mobile vehicle treks through.

During the operations of Police Mobile Station Vehicle, RNP partners with the ministries of Justice, and Local Government and Social Affairs so that all complaints received are given adequate attention.‎

Police remains with complaints that are within its mandate to investigate, while the rest are channeled to relevant institutions such as the judiciary and local leaders, where residents can get further assistance.

Another notable service that these vehicles are providing is educating residents on matters pertaining their rights and freedoms and where to report particular complaints that they may have.

Police currently has three Mobile Station Vehicles that cover countrywide areas which are assessed to be in need of the services.
