Police Week 2017: More families connected to solar energy in Nyarugenge

The Police Week activities continued Tuesday in Nyarugenge District where 114 households of Mpanga Village in Runzenze Cell, Mageragere Sector were installed with solar energy courtesy of Rwanda National Police.

The official handover was presided over by the Minister in the Office of the President, Vénantie Tugireyezu.

It was also attended by the Mayor of City of Kigali Pascal Nyamulinda, Commissioner of Police (CP) Dr. Daniel Nyamwasa, who represented RNP leadership, Central Region Police Commander, Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Rogers Rutikanga, the Mayor of Nyarugenge, and thousands of residents of Mageragere.

Minister Tugireyezu appealed to beneficiaries to ensure sustainability of the solar home systems and continue to engage in community development activities.

“This is a life changing donation from RNP and beneficiaries should ensure the solar power systems are well maintained. This is also in line with the realizing the second Economic Development and Poverty Reduction Strategy targets,” the Minister said.

“Part of what police does in this week is sensitizing youth against drug abuse, safe road usage, and supporting different social development initiatives. Such activities are geared towards building safer societies, which ultimately impacts on security,” she added.

She reminded residents that crime prevention is a responsibility of every citizen and urged them to be anti-crime ambassadors wherever they are.

The city Mayor, Nyamulinda said: “Such activities are aligned with the national security and development agenda, which all institutions including those in charge of security, are focused on. It is about the wellbeing of the citizens, which you should actively be part of in all aspects.”

CP Nyamwasa, on his part, said: “Rwanda National Police looks at human security as a preventive measure against crime that poverty would otherwise cause.”

Lights at night, he said, contributed to security especially at night and prevent diseases that can be caused by candle smoke, which is also a security issue, and facilitates businesses.

Over 3000 households and 30 health centres will be installed with solar energy across the country during the month-long social protection and anti-crime awareness to mark the RNP 17th anniversary.
