Police Week-2015 goes to Southern Province  and RNP hands over four houses

The Rwanda National Police (RNP) has handed over four houses it constructed for the disadvantaged Genocide survivors in Nyanza District.

The houses each valued at Rwf9 million were handed over to the beneficiaries on June 11 as part of the ongoing 'Police Week 2015' activities in the Southern Province held at Nyanza stadium.

This year's activities launched on June 9 are geared towards empowering communities' well being under the auspice of the government development agenda..

The Governor of Southern Province, Alphonse Munyenwari, who presided over the event, called upon religious and local leaders to support residents in combating gender and domestic violence, child and spousal abuse, which are still common in communities.

He made the call on June 11 on the 3rd day of  the Police Week 2015 in Southern Province, held at Nyanza Stadium.

The function attracted thousands of residents including students from various schools in the province, as well as members of the Rwanda Youth Volunteers in Crime Prevention of the province.

Governor Munyenwari said that everyone in Rwanda has a role to play in fostering safety – and particularly called on religious leaders to openly speak out against criminality and injustices that are committed within family.

“Religious leaders have a great influence on the behavior of their congregation, therefore, they should be key actors in promoting peacefulness in families, mutual respect and security in their communities,” he said.

“Rwanda National Police (RNP) has played its part very well, and has indicated that it will not stop at policing but also contribute to the socioeconomic welfare of Rwandans. All Rwandans should therefore emulate this act of patriotism and work together in promoting Rwanda’s security.”

“President Paul Kagame has guaranteed safety through professionalized security organs – and this is highly exhibited in RNP. Therefore, we should embrace collaboration and deliver timely information to police to combat crime.”

The IGP Emmanuel K. Gasana, commended residents for their resilience in combating crime, and particularly mentioned the youth of Nyanza as a dedicated group of volunteers that have readily worked with police to fight violence and crime in the district.

“Strong community mechanisms, complimented by dedicated youth, has sent out a strong message to criminals that they will not succeed in their schemes,” IGP Gasana said.

He disclosed that effective July 1, all sectors will have a police post as RNP continues to bring its services closer to the residents with decentralized services geared towards strengthening the ideal of community policing.

The IGP also received a token of appreciation from the Mayor of Nyanza, on behalf of RNP for constant efforts in maintaining law and order in the district.

The Mayor of Nyanza, Abdullah Murenzi, noted that security is the foundation of national growth and development – which calls for more collaboration between residents and security organs to foster safety.

“In many countries of the world, people do not see eye to eye with police. But in Rwanda we have a different story, where patriotism brings all of us together to develop our nation. Therefore, residents and local leaders should adhere to Rwandan spirit and community policing by being constantly active against crime,” he said.

The outreach activities and awareness campaigns against crime will calumniate  into RNP 15th anniversary  to be celebrated  on June 16, 2015 and will be an opportunity to appreciate the role, commitment and support exhibited by all partners in policing.
