Police in Nyanza District, on August 2, arrested four people for allegedly cutting trees.
The suspects; Kayiro Gatebuke, Bonheur Nzabahimana, Charles Niyomugisha and Antoine Mudenge,30, were arrested red-handed in Mututu cell of Busogo sector while cutting the plant called kabaruka, which is said to be trafficked to other countries as a raw material in the production of perfumes and lotions.
The suspects, all residents of Bugesera District are currently detained at Busoro Police station as investigations continue.
The Southern region Police Spokesperson, Chief Supt. Hubert Gashagaza commended area residents for their timely information that contributed to the arrest of the suspects.
He warned against the illegal act, which he said has an impact on the environment.
“Cutting of trees or deforestation contributes to environment degradation, which in one way or another has an effect on people’s health and the economy in general and we can’t allow that,” he added.
