Police urges parents to join in fighting school drop-outs

Rwanda National Police (RNP) has urged residents of Gakenke District to avoid engaging their children in activities that may lead them drop out of school.

The message was echoed on Friday in a meeting that brought together officials from RNP, local leaders and residents of Gakenke District.

This was after police intercepted 94 children who had missed school apparently to help out their parents at the market place.

Inspector of Police (IP) Jean Bosco Minani, Police and local authorizes had mounted an operation after learning that many children were missing school just to go help out their parents.

IP Minani pointed out that majority of the children that were intercepted are in primary schools and had showed up at the market on orders of their parents.

“Engaging children in such activities can result to school dropout. Dropping out of school not only affect the individual but also to the society. School dropouts are likely to engage themselves into criminal activities like drug abuse,” Minani warned the parents.

Gakenke vice mayor in charge of social affairs, Zephyrin  Ntakirutimana, commended the RNP for its efforts in ensuring that crimes are prevented and urged parents to take a lead in ensuring children’s welfare.

“Encourage your children to go to school. It is through education that your children will live a better life and also contribute to national development,” said Ntakirutimana.
