Police to face Atlabara in CAF Confederation Cup

The 2015 Peace Cup champions, Police football club will play Atlabara of South Sudan in the first round of the 2016 CAF Champions League, according to the draws conducted on Friday evening in Dakar, Senegal.

The law enforcers, who will be taking part in the continental tournament for the second following their 2013 debut, will play their first match at home in the  weekend of February 12-14 before traveling to the world’s youngest nation for the return leg tie in Kigali a week later.

Police will take on the winner between Vita Club Mokanda of Democratic Republic of Congo and Akwa United from Nigeria, in the next knockout phase, should they eliminate Atlabara.

Police FC spokesperson Chief Inspector of Police (CIP) Jean de Dieu Mayira, said: “Atlabara is a team you can’t undermine; it has good foreign players, you saw how they performed against the  giants of Sudan in the last CECAFA.”

“But again, we have good players and support from the Rwanda National Police leadership, and we will go into the game looking for maximum results,” he added.

CIP Mayira, meanwhile, said that although ten of their players were summoned in preparations for African Nations Championship (CHAN), which is scheduled for January 16 to February 7 in Rwanda, the remaining players are undergoing training as usual.

“CHAN will also act as a training ground where our players will acquire more experience that will guide players’ individual performance in other club competitions.”
