Rwanda National Police (RNP) has called on residents of Kirehe District to play a pivotal role in the fight against Gender based Violence (GBV) and other crimes as means to keep their neighbourhoods safe.
While addressing residents in a community meeting, the District Community Liaison Office, Inspector of Police (IP) Gahigi Harerimana, appealed to them to play an active role in prevention of crimes like Gender Based Violence and further asked them to share timely information about anyone suspected to be involved in such crimes.
“Police has been at the forefront in the fight against GBV and child abuse but the success of this campaign rests in the hands and hearts of you, the public by saying no and reporting involved,” he said.
IP Harerimana further pointed out that the government has put in place various strategies to further combat the GBV including the scale up of Isange One Stop Centre to all district hospitals across the country.
Some commendable success has been registered in GBV awareness and eventually contributed to reducing GBV cases. However, this scourge is yet to be eradicated and according to IP Harerimana, the intention is to completely eradicate GBV and related crimes.
Domestic and gender based violence is in most cases done internally in families, and there’s a likelihood that most of these cases remain unreported. We need people to understand their rights, either as a man or woman, and claim these rights by reporting any human rights violations they face in their homes,” said IP Harerimana.
He told residents that RNP is into mass campaign down in communities and in schools. “We need people to own the fight against any sort of crime…anything that affects their social wellbeing.”
